Barry Arbuckle, PhD

Barry Arbuckle, PhD, is President and CEO of MemorialCare Health System, a leading not-for-profit integrated health care delivery system with almost $2 billion in annual revenues. Its hospitals include Long Beach Memorial, Community Hospital Long Beach, Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach, Orange Coast Memorial, and Saddleback Memorial in Laguna Hills and San Clemente. MemorialCare’s physician organization, the MemorialCare Medical Foundation, includes two award winning groups — MemorialCare Medical Group and Greater Newport Physicians. MemorialCare also includes active Graduate Medical Education, clinical training, research programs, retail health, ambulatory surgery centers and philanthropic foundations.
Under Mr. Arbuckle’s leadership, MemorialCare has experienced unprecedented growth and financial performance. Its many accolades include the Gallup Great Workplace award for three years in a row, Most Wired Health System for eight consecutive years, Top 100 Most Integrated Health Systems for nine years and Best Governed Hospital Systems in the U.S. by The Governance Institute. In addition, its hospitals have been recognized for excellence in multiple specialties by US News & World Report and honored with A Hospital Safety Scores by Leapfrog.
Mr. Arbuckle serves on many boards of directors, including: Chair of March of Dimes-California, Officer of the Integrated Healthcare Association, and Chair of the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Task Force of the Healthcare Leadership Council in Washington, DC. Mr. Arbuckle was Chair of the California Hospital Association. He is also Chairman of the Board of the MemorialCare Innovation Fund which provides strategic investment funding to privately-held health care companies offering innovative products and services.

Adrienne Edens
Chief Information Officer
East Bay Region, Sutter Health
Adrienne Edens, LCHIME, FCHIME, CHCIO, joined Sutter Health as the Regional CIO for the East Bay Region in 2012. She was previously with St. Luke’s Health System in Boise, Idaho, where she was System Vice President and Chief Information Officer and served as a member of the Board of the Idaho Health Data Exchange (IHDE) the state-wide Health Information Exchange.
Adrienne is a healthcare information technology executive with over 30 years of experience. She served as a Regional CIO with Dignity Health (formerly Catholic Healthcare West) and as the national Information Officer for the health plan at Kaiser Permanente. As the Pacific Northwest Practice Director for First Consulting Group, she worked with many healthcare system clients to develop strategic plans and to select and install information technology solutions.
Adrienne holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of California at Davis and a Master’s Degree in Applied Psychology from the University of Santa Monica. She is a Certified Healthcare CIO (CHCIO) and is a Life Member, Fellow and past Board member of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). She is currently a member of the faculty for the CHIME CIO Boot Camp and serves on the Board of Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Analytics.
J. Scott Joslyn, PharmD

MemorialCare Health System
Scott Joslyn is the Senior Vice President and CIO for MemorialCare, a 6-hospital system in Southern California with revenues of $2 billion, 1,500 inpatient beds, 2,500 affiliated physicians, and approximately 11,000 employees. He and his staff of nearly 350 are responsible for information technology (IT), networking, and telecommunications. MemorialCare uses the Epic EHR system which went live at their first hospital in 2006 and is now used system-wide in both acute and ambulatory settings.
Mr. Joslyn oversees research for MemorialCare that supports and participates in multi-site clinical research through partnerships with physicians, government, academic, industry sponsors, communities, and patient groups. Currently, that research spans some 38 active studies, 40 service lines, and nearly 30 specialties involving more than 125 principal investigators.
Mr. Joslyn is on the Board of the Summation Health Ventures, an $80 million venture capital fund partnership between MemorialCare and Cedars Sinai Medical Center. SHV invests in promising companies that develop products and services in various healthcare market segments. In this capacity, he serves on company boards and advisory committees in which the fund has invested.
Mr. Joslyn has been a leader in local and statewide initiatives devoted to broad adoption of electronic medical records and health information exchange. He has been on the boards of OCPRHIO, WHIN, LBNH, and is a former and founding member of Health-e-LA. He was co-chair of CalRHIO's CIO Advisory Committee, and past co-chair of California Hospital Association’s HIT committee.
Mr. Joslyn co-founded and remains the chairperson of CHIEF, a southern California healthcare CIO information-sharing group. He is an active, long-standing member of both HIMSS and CHIME. He was and remains a contributor to HIMSS Analytics and serves as a surveyor for the HIMSS Stage 7.
Mr. Joslyn holds a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the University of the Pacific, and a Master of Business Administration from UCLA. He has taught health care information technology at California State University, Long Beach, and the University of Southern California.
John Jay Kenagy, PhD

Legacy Health
John Jay Kenagy, PhD, FHIMSS, is senior vice president and chief information officer at Legacy Health in Portland Oregon, serving in this role since March 2012. He is responsible for IS strategy and management for the organization and participates as a member of the executive leadership team. Legacy Health is a not-for-profit health system in Portland, Oregon, comprised of six hospitals and numerous other health services. Prior to joining Legacy, Dr. Kenagy was VP/CIO at Providence Health & Services and CIO at Oregon Health & Science University. He remains on the faculty of OHSU, teaching in the Department of Medical Informatics. Dr. Kenagy earned his PhD from Capella University’s School of Business and Technology focusing his doctoral research on ambulatory computerized provider order entry success. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering at Stanford University and a Master of Health Administration degree at University of Southern California. He is a Fellow in the Health Information Management and Systems Society.
Kara Marx, RN
Vice President and CIO
Methodist Hospital of Southern California
Kara Marx, RN, MHS is the Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Methodist Hospital Southern California located in greater Los Angeles area. Methodist Hospital, founded in 1903, is a 420-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving the central San Gabriel Valley. Services provided include comprehensive acute care, such as medical, surgical, perinatal, oncology, intensive care (neonatal and adult), and complete cardiovascular services. Methodist Hospital is a STEMI receiving center, advanced primary stroke center, and Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery.
Prior to joining Methodist Hospital, Kara worked as a senior consultant with several consulting firms including IBM and First Consulting Group where she had the opportunity to engage with many leading health care organizations across the country to contribute to their strategic goals. Additionally, Kara has experience working with a major health care IT software vendor, originally in the Washington, DC area and eventually moving out to the West Coast. Kara held many different roles during her time with the vendor which further expanded her unique background of clinical practice, consulting and software development/implementation.
Kara is a Registered Nurse and has a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Sciences. As a Registered Nurse Kara spent many years providing patient care in the ambulatory and acute care setting on the East Coast. During this time she also held management positions establishing new service offerings to the community.
Kara is actively involved in many industry organizations including HIMSS and ACHE of which she is a Fellow in both. Additionally, she has served on several Advisory Boards including KLAS Research and Qwest Diagnostics, she also teaches at University of Southern California.
Michael Pfeffer, MD
CMIO and Interim CIO
UCLA Health
Michael Pfeffer, MD, FACP serves as the Interim Chief Information Officer (CIO) and the Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) for the UCLA Health Sciences, which is comprised of the UCLA Hospital System, the UCLA Faculty Practice Group, and the David Geffen School of Medicine. Michael is responsible for the development and operations of the information systems, the overall health IT strategic plan, and the implementation of transformative and innovative technologies to further UCLA’s mission of healing humankind one patient at a time. With UCLA’s initial "Big-Bang" go-live in March 2013, Michael is the lead physician for UCLA's electronic health record encompassing over 26,000 users.
Michael also serves as a core faculty member for the internal medicine residency program, focusing on information technology solutions for educating residents and improving transitions of care. In addition, he continues to practice as an academic hospitalist, working with residents and medical students in the care of patients.
Michael graduated from Brown University with a degree in chemical engineering. He received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical School and completed his residency and chief residency in internal medicine at UCLA.
