Fall 2014Clinical Informatics

The SoCal HIMSS Clinical Informatics Committee and Upcoming Clinical Informatics Summit

by Toon Prasertsit, RN, BSN, MBA, PMP

nurseThe SoCal HIMSS Clinical Informatics Committee is committed to providing programs that will enhance and promote the understanding and application of information technology in healthcare. Today, the clinical informatics field continues to evolve to address many challenges. We have progressed from the early days of EMR implementations to the current landscape of using analytics to improve patient outcomes and to manage population health. There continues to be challenges in the industry that impact clinical informatics, including adoption of new care models, ICD-10 implementation (and delays), and Meaningful Use. New technology and consumer involvement will continue to offer opportunities to enhance patient engagement and improve outcomes.

The Clinical Informatics committee is working to bring current and relevant information to your practice. The committee is in the process of planning our annual Clinical Informatics Summit which will be held at the Beckman Center at UC-Irvine campus on May 15, 2015. We are also looking to sponsor a Nursing Informatics Prep Course for professional development. This course will be an intensive two day course that will focus on current informatics trends and issues. It will include content for Registered Nurses who are interested in becoming American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) board certified Informatics Nurse.  The course date will be announced soon. We are also planning future networking events.

The Clinical Informatics Committee is currently chaired by Toon Prasertsit, RN, BSN, MBA, PMP of I&T Consulting Group. We have committee members and volunteers composed of registered nurses, a pharmacist, and IT professionals with a diverse healthcare IT and industry background. Other clinical and IT professionals are invited to join our team!
