Meet the Speakers and Panelists

Keynote: Christopher "Topher" Sharp, MD, CMIO Stanford Healthcare

Dr. Sharp serves as Chief Medical Information Officer for Stanford Health Care with responsibility for driving the enhancement and expansion of clinical information systems to drive organizational strategic outcomes in quality, experience and value. Dr. Sharp is accountable for the content, design, and workflow of key clinical systems as well as provider and staff clinical systems adoption and proficiency.Dr. Sharp is a mentor for the Stanford Clinical Informatics Fellowship program. He is a practicing General Internal Medicine physician at Stanford in both clinic and hospital medicine. He holds board certifications in Internal Medicine and Clinical Informatics.Dr. Sharp has held lead roles in clinical technology transformation at Stanford since 2006. He was the physician lead for hospital EHR implementation including CPOE replacement, pharmacy replacement, nursing and physician electronic documentation, surgical scheduling and documentation, and emergency department and intensive care CPOE initial implementation. He served as lead physician for EHR implementation across more than 60 clinic areas of all specialties.

Panel Moderator - Patrick J. Guffey, MD, CHIMSS Board President

Patrick is a pediatric anesthesiologist at the University of Colorado and the Associate Clinical Director of the anesthesiology department at Children’s Hospital Colorado. He is the IT clinical champion for perioperative services, and serves on numerous other IT committees at Children’s Colorado. Patrick’s research work centers on using clinical IT and the EMR to further healthcare quality and patient safety, and he has written many articles, abstracts, and lectures on the subject. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a BSE in Chemical Engineering and an MD. He fulfilled his residency in Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Francisco and his fellowship training was performed in pediatric anesthesiology at the University of Colorado.

Panelist: Patrick Kneeland, MD, Executive Medical Director for Patient & Provider Experience, UCHealth

In his role, Patrick develops and promotes organizational strategies and improvement efforts that enhance patient and provider experience and engagement. Patrick also serves as Director of Quality, Safety, and Experience for the Hospital Medicine Group at University of Colorado Hospital and is a founding faculty member of the Institute for Healthcare Quality, Safety, and Efficiency (IHQSE). After completing residency in internal medicine at the University of California - San Francisco, Patrick completed a fellowship in Academic Hospital Medicine where he focused on transformation of clinical delivery systems and the role of culture in improving patient safety. He subsequently completed a health systems leadership fellowship through the Institute for Physician Leadership at the Center for the Health Professions in San Francisco, CA. He is a certified Patient Safety Officer.

Panelist: David Whitling, MD, CMIO Boulder Community Health

Dr. Whitling is a practicing emergency medicine physician and also serves as the Chief Medical Informatics Officer at Boulder Community Health.  He is board-certified in Clinical Informatics and has worked as a consultant for a major EHR vendor - participating in implementation and optimization events around the country.  He graduated from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC and completed residency in Emergency Medicine at Denver Health Medical Center.

Panelist: David Beuther, MD, FCCP  CMIO National Jewish Health

Dr. David Beuther is the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) and an Associate Professor of Medicine at National Jewish Health, in Denver, CO. As CMIO, Dr. Beuther provides leadership in the planning, selection, implementation, and optimization of all clinical and research information systems and re-engineering of clinical workflows to improve the delivery of care throughout National Jewish Health. Dr. Beuther practices pulmonary and critical care medicine, and has published significantly on the epidemiology and pathophysiology of obesity and asthma. He is currently studying how clinical data can be used to automate the identification of specific disease phenotype cohorts, such as severe asthma, to support targeted clinical care intervention, outcome measures, and clinical trial activities.

Panelist: Katie Markley, MD, Medical Director of Informatics UCHealth Medical Group

Dr. Katie Markley is a Family Medicine Physician who has been with UCHealth for 7 years and currently practices as an Urgent Care physician. She is one of the Senior Medical Directors of Informatics for UCHealth and the Medical Director of Informatics for UCHealth Medical Group. Dr. Markley also sits on the UCHealth Medical Group Board of Directors. Through her leadership role she works closely with physicians and providers throughout UCHealth on improving efficiency and decreasing burnout.

Panelist: Corey Lyon, DO, FAAFP  Medical Director, AF Williams Family Medicine Center

Dr. Lyon is an associate professor in the department of family medicine for the University of Colorado School of Medicine.  Currently serving as the Associate Program Director for the University of Colorado Family Medicine Residency in Denver Colorado and the medical director of AF Williams Family Medicine Center, which is the teaching clinic for the University of Colorado residents and faculty. Prior to joining the University of Colorado Department of Family Medicine, Corey was a faculty member for the Research Family Medicine Residency in Kansas City, MO for 4 years.  Before joining the Research Family Medicine Residency, he served in the US Navy as a family physician for 7 years. Corey also completed the UNC Faculty Development Fellowship in 2009 and the National Institute for Program Director Development in 2014.
