Two case studies will address national efforts to create data structures and data extraction techniques to identify unique nursing data that can be linked directly to patients. New metrics are being developed using time-referenced data as well as link individual nurses to each patient to measure nursing care systems of care.

John M. Welton, PhD, RN, FAAN Professor, University of Colorado College of Nursing What is the value of nursing care or the added value of each nurse? The question is compelling in an era of value-based healthcare payment and new quality and cost emphasis. This is the focus of research for Dr. Welton. He started his career at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill investigating the use of nursing diagnosis and DRG to explain outcomes of hospital care. Further work at the Medical University of South Carolina examined better costing models for nursing care. In the past few years, Dr. Welton has been the co-leader of a national expert panel to devise methods to measure the value of nursing care and develop new performance metrics to measure care performance using existing data in the EHR using order entry and bar code medication administration time-referenced data. Dr. Welton obtained his PhD in nursing and minor in medical informatics from UNC, and MSN in Nursing administration. He has had faculty appointments at the University of Maryland, School of Nursing, the Medical University of South Carolina, Florida Southern College and currently is Professor at the University of Colorado College of Nursing
