Artificial Intelligence (AI) is widely touted as a technical breakthrough that will revolutionize medicine (among other fields). But both its promise and limitations are widely misunderstood. Steve Demuth, Mayo CTO, will describe what is required to create and adopt AI in the medical sphere, and where the true revolutionary potential lies. Along the way, he’ll talk about a necessary shift from architecture that is about data, to one that is equally concerned with knowledge and cognition. Steve will share his thoughts on the value and positioning of leading edge AI technology to enable current and future plans for business capabilities at Mayo.
Three innovative new healthcare technology companies will share their stories built on the passion and focus they share in enabling patient needs.

Universally, patients want to know three things: What is my diagnosis? What are my treatment options? How quickly can I get back to normal? The job of the healthcare provider is to deliver on those desired outcomes in the most efficient manner possible. Today, clinicians succeed through a combination objective care methods and the subjective human connection with their patients. For a clinician, the most fulfilling patient encounters are exactly those that answer the patient's three most important questions with a clear treatment plan.
Healthcare is one of the most intimate of human experiences as it touches the physical, emotional, mental and higher aspects of self. Technology will never replace the clinician, but it will help them scale the more utilitarian parts of their job so they can focus more on the medicine and not the minutiae.
AI has the promise of magnifying the clinician's ability to practice medicine, but there are evolutionary steps that must be taken between here and there.
First, digitizing the treatment pathways that exist before, during and after healthcare encounters are the first step to bridging the processes the clinicians have developed to do their job provide the foundation for augmented clinician intelligence. Second, the pathways must be informed by the right data at the right time to create a responsive, personalized experience for the patient and support clinical decision making.
With these two factors in place, AI can be applied to accelerate the improvement of pathways and information so that clinicians can focus treating the whole person through their helathcare journey. Each of these innovators is committed to delivering enabling technology and pacesetting innovation for healthcare consumers.
