Learning to Love your CIS in a Pandemic

We would like to welcome Dr. Rob Hayward, an internist, health informatician, and Professor of Medicine in the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry in exploring  how clinician fears and hopes for a wide-area clinical information system may shift with pandemic experiences. We will consider how an anti-note-bloat protective strategy may have fared in the face of pandemic pressures.

Abstract:
Fear of clinician burnout, and the culpability of Digital Health Records, has been overshadowed by greater fear that the health care sector may succumb to pandemic overwhelm. Alberta's "Connect Care" clinical information system launched at peak awareness of physician frustration with digital records... and continues deployment in the midst of an unprecedented public health emergency.

Arguably, the COVID-19 pandemic has sharpened our awareness of both the potential benefits and harms of a fully integrated clinical information system. This session will revisit anticipatory hopes and fears, highlighting how pandemic pressures have brought clinical documentation norms into focus.
