COVID-19 has had an unparalleled impact on the world and on healthcare. Steward Health Care System had to respond on the clinical, business and technology fronts.

In Massachusetts, which was facing a catastrophic surge, they designated some hospitals as COVID-19 centers, expanded critical care beds, added monitoring, and brought in nurses from FL and AZ.

New projects were escalated including users working remotely and enforcing new security requirements, evaluating hardware requirements, using cloud technologies, rapid deployment of telemedicine, and implementing new onboarding processes for traveling staff/surge staff.

While they established processes in critical care, the IT department prepared Steward for the rapid changes in policy and protocols. As the science evolved, changes were made to the EHR to support emerging recommendations as quickly as 72 hours.
