Social Determinants of Health: Current State and the Opportunity Impact of Health Information Technology

 

Objectives:

  • Increase knowledge of social determinants of health (SDOH) and their impact on community and patient health and wellbeing
  • Increase understanding of the clinical and business drivers associated with SDOH
  • Define barriers to addressing SDOH in healthcare practice and public health infrastructure
  • Understand information technology barriers and emerging solutions to support clinicians in managing SDOH

Maryanne C. Bombaugh, MD, MSc, MBA, FACOG

Maryanne C. Bombaugh is a gynecologist at the Community Health Center of Cape Cod and past president of the Massachusetts Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Bombaugh has been an active member of the medical society since joining the Society in 1993. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees, is a member of the House of Delegates, and is a member of the Massachusetts Delegation to the American Medical Association.

Dr. Bombaugh was a member of the Committee on Legislation for 10 years and served as its chair from 2012-2016. She has also been a member of the Task Force of Physician-Public Collaboration, the Opioid Task Force, Presidential Duties Task Force, the Committee on Strategic Planning, the Committee on Member Services, the Committee on Women in Medicine, the Organized Medical Staff Section, the Committees on Recognition Awards and the Committee on the Quality of Medical Practice.

Prior to joining the Community Health Center of Cape Cod, Dr. Bombaugh was Executive Medical Director of Population Health and Medical Director for Quality and Patient Safety at Reliant Medical Group and was Associate Medical Director for Quality for the Steward Health Care Network.

In addition to her clinical work and activity in organized medicine, Dr. Bombaugh also serves on the boards of CeltiCare Health and Coverys.

Dr. Bombaugh earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and completed her internship at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston Texas and her residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

A veteran of the U. S. military, she served 12 years in the United States Army Medical Corps, eight years on active duty and four years in the reserves, and completed her military service as the Division Chief of Gynecology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Dr. Bombaugh earned her undergraduate degree from Smith College, a Master of Science degree from the School of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts, and her Master’s in Business Administration from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts.

She has also earned a graduate certificate in the Business of Medicine from Johns Hopkins University, completed a certification program in medical management from the American College of Physician Executives, and is a graduate of the executive leadership programs from the Heller School of Management at Brandeis University, the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Leadership Institute at the University of North Carolina, and the Executive Leadership Program at the Harvard School of Public Health. She resides in Falmouth.

 

Tonya Hongsermeier, MD

Lahey Health

Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer

Dr. Hongsermeier currently serves as Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer at Lahey Health.  She studied medicine at Boston University and trained in Internal Medicine at the New England Deaconess Hospital. In the course of medical practice, she realized the challenges presented by the “managed care” movement to patient care. She obtained an MBA from BU’s School of Management to better understand how to bridge the caregivers and the accountants in healthcare. After graduating, she served in a variety of positions in industry ultimately finding her way into technology as a backbone for a learning, continuously improving, patient-centered, digital healthcare system. Her prior positions in informatics include senior roles at InterQual, Cerner Corporation and Partners Healthcare. There she led the development of a renowned Clinical Decision Support and Knowledge Management team within the Clinical Informatics Research and Development Group and implemented a variety of leading-edge tools and governance structures to improve the embedding of clinical knowledge in electronic health records and, thereby, the utilization of evidence-based practices by Partners caregivers.  Her team implemented a collaboration and content management platform before there was Facebook.  She served as a Team Lead on the government-funded Clinical Decision Support Consortium, Advancing Clinical Decision Support research project and Health eDecisions Initiative. She also served as the inaugural co-chair for the Semantic Web Healthcare-Life Sciences Special Interest Group for the World Wide Web Consortium under Tim Berners-Lee which is a foundation for deep-learning architectures in medicine. Her focus remains on ensuring that our caregivers and patients have access to the best data, tools and wisdom for achieving health and wellness
