Course Description

Course Description:  This intensive two day course focuses on current informatics trends and issues.  It includes content for Registered Nurses who are interested in becoming American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) board certified Informatics Nurses.  Other clinical professional working in informatics may wish to take the course to become exposed to the course topics.  Fourteen (14) Continuing Education Units [CEUs] are awarded to each student who completes the Course.  This program is approved for up to 14.5 continuing education (CE) hours for use in fulfilling the continuing education requirements of the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information & Management Systems (CPHIMS) and the Certified Associate in Healthcare Information & Management Systems (CAHIMS).

Course Objectives

  1. Discuss the scope and standards of nursing informatics practice.
  2. Describe professional practice, trends and issues within the informatics nurse role.
  3. Explore management and leadership issues affecting informatics in healthcare settings.
  4. Identify key concepts in informatics, information technology, information management, knowledge generation and data security.
  5. Consider human factors in relation to information technology systems.
  6. Describe models and theories associated with informatics.
  7. Delineate steps of the system life as it applies to information technology in the health setting.

Faculty Biography

Susan K. Newbold, PhD, RN-BC, FAAN, FHIMSS, nursinginformatics@comcast.net, is the Course Director and Consultant in Clinical Informatics, Franklin, TN.  Most recently she was the Education Lead for the implementation of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) at the Hospital Corporation of America, Nashville, TN.  She is uniquely qualified to teach this course as she has experience in the vendor, consulting, academic and hospital world.  Dr. Newbold is Board Certified in Nursing Informatics and initiated the first review course in nursing informatics in 1995.  In 2001 she won the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing International Technology Award for Knowledge Advancement for this course.

Dr. Newbold earned her PhD and MS in Nursing from the University of Maryland, Baltimore.  She is co-founder of CARING.  Identified as a pioneer in nursing informatics, Susan co-edited five books and has written numerous articles on informatics topics.  Susan was a keynote speaker in the first nursing informatics conferences held in Taiwan and Singapore and has consulted in informatics in the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Slovenia, and Taiwan.  She is Vice Chair Communications for the International Medical Informatics Association Nursing Informatics Special Interest Group.  Susan was selected in the 2013 Class for “Women to Watch” by the Nashville Medical News.  In 2015 she was selected by the HIMSS Board as the Chapter Leader of the Year which was awarded in 2016.

 

Ginny Meadows, RN, BS, FHIMSS has more than 25 years’ experience in clinical informatics and health information technology, and has been in healthcare for over 30 years. Most recently she was the Vice President, regulatory strategy for McKesson Corporation, responsible for critical review of market position and product development strategy related to healthcare policy and regulatory topics, focusing on the move to value-based care and payment reform. Prior to that, she coordinated a company-wide program related to the CMS EHR Incentive program and meaningful use.  Ginny has held key positions in product management and development, terminology and content management, and analytics and quality improvement initiatives. She began her healthcare informatics career at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, as the clinical coordinator in information services. She recently was appointed to a National Quality Forum technical expert panel on Patient Decision Aids, and is a member of the ONC FACA Workgroup for Advanced Health Models and Meaningful Use. She recently participated as a member of the CMS Lean Design MIPS Workgroup as well as numerous CMS quality measurement improvement activities. She is also an active member of HIMSS, AMIA and the ANA.
