The October 2019 HIMSS NCA program features a distinguished panel of experts from three Federal Health Agencies with executive level and research points of view on data science, biomedical data and research.  These leaders will discuss the latest data initiatives and programs and the progress they are making in harnessing the power of the biomedical research data ecosystem. This panel focuses on federal healthcare research, and while NIH is the largest public funder of biomedical research in the world, also VA and DHA are strong investors in federal healthcare research to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability. Data science holds significant potential for accelerating the pace of biomedical research. Federal health agencies are taking steps to promote the use of FHIR in its funded clinical research to facilitate data access and promote interoperability of research data while protecting patient privacy and ensuring consistency with informed consent. With a plethora of data and associated data platforms it is ever more crucial to ensure interoperability and agreement on standards implementation. This will be crucial for the world of biomedical data as researchers seek to integrate diverse data types to unlock new insights.
