Important Notes
Chapter Website/POC Call update On Nov. 3, HIMSS Operations hosted a webinar with the chapter point of contact, as well as other interested board members to provide updates and answers related to the chapter websites.
Key Items:
- Drupal is a content management system (CMS) which will be replacing Results Direct. HIMSS was satisfied with Results Directs' ability to provide an immediate solution; however, phase 2 approach will be with Drupal CMS.
- Review chapter website photos and consider changing them to fit the profile and images the chapter would like to become associated with.
- Ensure all events are updated, as this is the most visited page for all websites.
- Sponsorships are vital to the chapter. Consider however the depth of real estate given to sponsor logos on the home page in order to ensure branding immediately is recognized as HIMSS chapter first.
A recording of the webinar is available here. Please contact Tammy Kwiatkoski with chapter website questions.
Informational Return – Due to IRS All chapters were to file their annual informational return with the IRS by Nov. 15. All tax-exempt organizations whose gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less are required to electronically submit Form 990-N, unless choosing to file Form 990 or Form 990-EZ. All chapters must have submitted the appropriate filing to the IRS by Nov. 15 or risk losing tax-exempt status. Listen to the Chapter Leader Webinar titled, “Chapter Financials & Taxes” to learn more about how and what each chapter should file. Please contact Chapter Staff with questions.
Chapters Respond to Action Many chapters participated as partners with HIMSS for National Health IT Week Oct. 5-8.
We did have a good number tweeting about Policy Summit and NHIT week in addition to those that changed their profile photo to the IHeartHIT logo. Here are a few examples and special thanks to the following chapters:
HIMSS looks forward to working with chapters around annual conference to connect on social media.

On the Move: Professional Certification Activities from Chapters
Achieving professional certification is an important and effective way of engaging chapter members, and promoting members’ professional development. Many HIMSS chapters have put professional certification into strategic planning process and actively promote HIMSS two professional certifications: the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS), and the Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS). Through careful planning, they have hosted certification review courses and onsite exams. The following is a brief list of chapters with CPHIMS and CAHIMS review course and exam activities since July 2015:
- Georgia Chapter: CPHIMS exam (Aug. 26)
- Partners HealthCare: CAHIMS review course and exam (Oct.19 and 20)
- Tennessee Chapter: CPHIMS review course (Oct. 28)
- HIMSS Greater China CPHIMS review course and exam (Nov. 5-8)
- Southern California Chapter: CAHIMS review course and exam (Nov. 13)
- Southern California Chapter: CPHIMS review course and exam (Nov. 14)
- Nebraska Chapter: CPHIMS review course and exam (Nov. 19 and 20)
The CPHIMS review courses and exams attracted over 30 participants from Southern California chapter and the inaugural HIMSS Greater China events in Beijing, respectively.
In addition, Georgia and Wisconsin Dairyland Chapters conduct year around on-going CPHIMS study group cavities
Several chapters have already scheduled their certification review course and exam, including Colorado Chapter (Dec. 4), Northern California Chapter (April 7 and 8, 2016), Iowa Chapter (April 30 and May 1, 2016).
Contact Sam King, senior director, professional development (virtual events), at 949.933.6048 with questions regarding CPHIMS/CAHIMS review course and exam.
Certification at HIMSS16 HIMSS Certification (CPHIMS/CAHIMS) will be offering a certification review course and exams during HIMSS16. The CPHIMS Review Course will be held On Feb. 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for those who are interested. There will be multiple opportunities to take the CPHIMS exam or CAHIMS exam during the HIMSS Annual Conference as well. Value of Health IT
What has Health IT done for you lately? By now we’ve got a pretty good sense that health IT makes a difference. Yes, it can be challenging to the organization as paperless communication becomes the new normal. It affects everything from workflow to culture, and it’s a great test of an organization’s ability to adapt, all while participating in the high-stakes process of providing quality healthcare. The benefits of health IT though, are seen in direct and indirect ways. HIMSS, has identified five categories of value for health IT, and have tracked thousands of instances where hospitals, practices and other providers have seen the benefits. HIMSS chapters can participate and benefit from this program.
First, HIMSS has created the HIMSS HIT Value STEPS™ framework, which is found within our Value Suite. This is the best way to see how the five STEPS categories are arranged and how those break out into more detailed types of value. Each one depicts an actual example of value, with the name of the organization, the value realized, and the source of the information. Over the past several months the tool has been modified so that users can search geographically for examples. When Missouri is selected, the tool will only show examples from that state. It’s a great way to see what members are doing.
Second, the examples shown through the tool are just some of what has been collected, and HIMSS is always looking to keep it fresh. That’s where chapters can help. HIMSS is looking for leads and stories. Examples of how members are using health IT to improve clinical outcomes, operational efficiencies, save time, money, or just create an all-around better environment for patients and staff alike are welcome. Chapters can help HIMSS grow the collection and refine the STEPS framework. Please contact Rod Piechowski, senior director, health information systems, with questions concerning the program and participation.
New HIMSS Podcast "STEPS To Value": Episode 1- Why Value? Why Now? In the inaugural episode of STEPS to Value, Rod Piechowski, Senior Director, Health Information Systems at HIMSS, serves as host and moderator. His first guest is Pat Wise, Vice President, HIS at HIMSS. They discuss why everyone in healthcare is starting to focus on value. We also talk with Jonathan French, Director, HIS at HIMSS about the role that measuring quality against process improvement plays on value optimization strategies. We’re also joined by Margaret Schulte, lead consultant on our value collection project; she shares some specific examples of value providers have achieved.
