March 2016 Austin HIMSS Newsletter

Message from the President > >

Hello chapter members,

March was a very busy month for HIMSS. The month began with the annual conference in Las Vegas, NV with over 40,000 attendees representing providers, payers, consultants, and over 1300 vendors.  If you have not attended a national conference you should put it on your professional bucket list to do so.  It is quite the experience to learn from and network with our industry's top professionals. Common topics of the conference were analytics, patient engagement, FHIR standards, security, new payment models, just to name a few. The conference concluded with a keynote from Peyton Manning just days before his NFL retirement announcement. If his current job of selling pizzas and singing insurance company jingles doesn't work out, he'll be in high demand on the leadership speaking circuit. He was excellent.

A highlight of the week was attending the HIMSS Gala Awards Banquet with fellow Austin HIMSS board members in which we received the Small Chapter of the Year award. This was the first time our chapter received this award and serves as a testament to the hard work done by members who built this chapter.

The following week consisted of two additional events. Our monthly speaker was David Baker, Chief Architect for Ascension Information Services. Dave's presentation focused on enterprise architecture and the application of this disciple to help drive strategic planning. If you missed the presentation you can access his slides on our website. The following Friday was our first social of the year and done in conjunction with SXSW and the British Embassy. There is so much going on in healthcare IT and particularly in Austin, I'd like to encourage all of you to recruit friends and colleagues to the chapter. Something I like to do is forward these monthly newsletters to help spark interest. In my opinion, the $39/yr membership is well worth it for what you get in return.  We've grown by 20% (100 members) in the last 6 months.

I hope to see you at our next monthly educational event. Dr. Sriram Vishwanath, Ph.D. will discuss high precision analytics that can improve both care and risk management with the healthcare ecosystem. As mentioned above, this topic was consistent throughout the HIMSS conference.  We're very lucky to have such a great speaker in Austin to discuss this topic.

Lastly, please consider attending our TX regional HIMSS meeting in Houston May 12-13th. Registration information can be found at www.himssregional.com

All the best,

-Doug Burkott, FHIMSS
