Our HIMSS SoCal AAC Interviews a Student in Action!

Academic Alliance Chairperson, Thao Tran, had the opportunity to interview student, Danica Ramos, about her recent experience as a Program Assistant at HIMSS16.

What is the most engaging, informative and stimulating program that HIMSS Annual Conference offers to students? It's the Program Assistant (PA). There's no better way to learn about the industry and be able to network with 40,000 health information technology professionals. In a pool of hundreds of applicants, HIMSS National conducts a comprehensive review, selecting only a certain number of students to be Program Assistants.

USC Job Fair on 4/14/16

Preparation, communication, career planning, and networking are essential elements for students to have and develop over time. However, students cannot develop these skills if resources are not present. On Thursday, April 14th, 2016, Sol Price School of Public Policy invited HIMSS AAC team and 72 organizations  to come on the Von Kleinsmid Courtyard and provide HIT opportunity to its students. Among 43,000 students and 4,000 full-time faculty members, we met a HIMSS member!

I had the privilege of attending the Disruptive Women in Healthcare educational session at HIMSS16. This session highlighted six successful female professionals and a moderator.

Innovative use of data and analytics was a major focus for Dell at HIMSS16

by Teddy Shah

Dell’s presence at the HIMSS national conference each year is a major focus for the thought leaders and educational staff at Dell. This year, Dell’s CEO, Michael Dell, was the keynote speaker, and he focused his remarks on the transformational change that is coming to healthcare and the capabilities that will be needed. With value-based reimbursement, two factors are clear: data, and the people and systems that manage it, will be key to success, and the ability of healthcare leaders to change their thinking about the business will determine the way that healthcare uses that data.

Interviews with our Keynote Speakers at our Annual Healthcare IT Conference

IBM Chief Nursing Officer Judy Murphy and Salesforce Chief Medical Officer Joshua Newman

Earlier this year, the SoCal HIMSS chapter hosted its annual Healthcare IT Conference on the beautiful UCLA campus. In front of a packed room, prominent speakers from healthcare providers, including Hoag, Martin Luther King, Jr., Healthcare Partners and Cedars-Sinai, discussed current and emerging trends from patient engagement to mobile apps and quality reporting.

We were honored to have two very distinguished keynotes headline this year’s conference: Judy Murphy, Chief Nursing Officer at IBM Global Healthcare, and Dr. Joshua Newman, Chief Medical Officer at Salesforce. Both discussed how healthcare is moving from episodic, transactional events to longer-term, engaged experiences centered around the patient. They both gave us an opportunity to sit down with them and ask some questions about where they see the health IT market heading.
