Austin HIMSS President's Message - March 2017

Hello Austin HIMSS Chapter members,

Last week over 40,000 healthcare IT professionals gathered in Orlando to share ideas on the future of healthcare. Ginni Rometty, CEO of IBM delivered the opening keynote and discussed the possibilities artificial intelligence can offer healthcare. She highlighted the progress IBM Watson is making in this space and how computers can augment the practice of medicine. Other topics that garnered a lot of attention are precision medicine and interoperability.  In the closing keynote delivered by Kevin O’Leary (of ‘Shark Tank’ fame), he expressed his excitement for innovation in healthcare and the amount of investment capital is currently being spent.  However, he commented that the industry needs to solve the interoperability problem just as the financial industry has made interoperability and speed of transmission ubiquitous.

The Austin HIMSS Chapter made a return trip to the Awards Gala last week to honor one of our chapter leaders and co-founder of the Chapter.  Emma Cartmell was awarded the John A. Page Outstanding Service Award.  This award is given each year to an individual recognizing them for sustained exceptional service to the society.  Congratulations Emma!
