Commitment to Interoperability Clarifies Vision

When the CEO of an organization makes a commitment to interoperability it signals a clear vision to the  entire organization. The ONC has created the Interoperability Pledge as a way for strategic thinkers to demonstrate a commitment to strategies and products that support interoperability.

What is the Interoperability Pledge?

The Interoperability Pledge is an agreement to implement three core commitments in your  organizational vision.

  1. Consumer Access: To help consumers easily and securely access their electronic health  information, direct it to any desired location, learn how their information can be shared and  used, and be assured that this information will be effectively and safely used to benefit their  health and that of their community.
  2. No Blocking/Ensuring Transparency: To help providers share individuals’ health information for  care with other providers and their patients whenever permitted by law, and not block  electronic health information (defined as knowingly and unreasonably interfering with  information sharing).
  3. Standards: Implement federally recognized, national interoperability standards, policies,  guidance, and practices for electronic health information, and adopt best practices including  those related to privacy and security.

How does this benefit your organization?

Cutting‐edge organizations are using interoperability to save money and provide better care by using the data available through interoperability to reduce duplicate  testing and obtain more accurate medication, allergy, and problem lists. "Companies that provide 90 percent of electronic health records used by hospitals nationwide have pledged."

Taking the Interoperability Pledge is will promote the vision within your organization of truly functional interoperability between systems and between organizations.
