Happy Holidays!

President’s message:

The end of the year is a good time to look back and celebrate what we have achieved together. While at the National level, HIMSS continues to make significant advancements towards health innovation, public policy, professional advancement, and digital health transformation, at a local level WI Chapter continues to advance the mission by offering our members various educational events, opportunities to advance professionally through CPHIMS bootcamps and opportunities to network.

As the last newsletter of this year and we say goodbye to 2022 and welcome 2023, I wanted to thank all our chapter members and especially our volunteers and acknowledge your commitment and dedication without which we would not be successful in advancing our mission.

As we look forward from a Chapter perspective, we invite all our chapter members to our first post pandemic in person Spring Leadership conference in March 2023. Such events are not successful without our members’ support and volunteer participation.

As we look forward from an overall Healthcare IT perspective – there are many technological advancements and trends to watch for in 2023 such as expansion of telehealth, advancements in artificial intelligence, development of workflow automation, increased focus on interoperability (from both provider and payer side), health equity advancements with focus on social determinants of health all the while keeping at forefront the need to attract and retain top talent. Hiring, reskilling, and upskilling will be paramount in 2023 and remains top priority for many leaders.

On behalf of the WI Chapter Board, we wish all of you a joyful, peaceful, and happy holiday season!

We got a few updates from our directors and some fun stuff as well to kick off the holidays. Hope you enjoy!

Membership:

The WI HIMSS chapter was proud to offer two professional certification virtual boot camps in 2022. In May, we presented a CAHIMS boot camp with a roster of 25 attendees from across the country. In October, we presented a CPHIMS bootcamp with a roster of 38 attendees, making it our largest boot camp to date! Our boot camps are offered as a FREE benefit to our chapter members who are seeking to advance their professional development through certification.

We plan to continue our boot camps in 2023, with a CAHIMS boot camp scheduled for March 6-27 and a CPHIMS boot camp scheduled for Oct 9-30. Boot camps are held over 4 separate sessions on Mondays from 3pm-5pm. A notification will be posted in the chapter newsletter and on the chapter website when registration for each event opens.

If you attended a boot camp this past year and achieved your certification, email us at membershipdirector@wihimsschapter.org. We’d love to hear from you!

Spotlight

In the spotlight section, we bring to you our scholarship winner – Tyler J Sturzl. Get to know about Tyler!

My journey in Healthcare IT started in 2021 at Exact Sciences in Madison, WI. Exact Sciences is a world-leading cancer diagnostic company. Every day we work as a multifaceted team to discover more, provide a better patient experience, and push the envelope in the products we provide to the world. I work within our IT department on a team that manages the systems associated with our clinical, regulatory affairs, and biostatistics business units. Specifically, I work as an analyst on our laboratory information system. This position gives me a great viewpoint into clinical study system workflows, data management, and business relationship building within our company. As the industry rapidly evolves, I am excited to be part of that healthcare IT transformation by developing innovative software products, engaging with our clinical partners, and supporting our scientific discoveries.

I graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics and business administration from Ripon College. I'm pursuing a master's of business administration from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater with an emphasis in cybersecurity; I plan to graduate in May 2023.

My ultimate aspiration is to eventually attend law school and become a leader in healthcare, law, and technology.

In my free time, you can find me cooking, baking, or playing on my local rugby team.

Sponsorship:

As your Director of Sponsorships, I am so excited for 2023! We have added some members to the education committee and will be in person again! All that leads to many more opportunities as a sponsor to be heard and seen. We will be back in person in Wisconsin Dells on Thursday, March 9th for our Spring Leadership Conference. The lineup of speakers is being put together as I write this, and it is looking to be outstanding! An ELITE Level sponsorship for $3000 gets you a booth at the conference (No additional charge) and your logo on everything. In addition, we’ll give you the opportunity to sponsor a webinar or in person regional event during the year. What a great deal, right?? These sponsorship dollars are important for WI HIMSS to be able to put on all our programs and so we sincerely appreciate all the support we have gotten over the years. If you are interested in sponsoring next year or know of some place that would, please let me know and I can get you any details and/or answer any questions. I can be reached at timothymckeough@qupsuccess.com or at 715.297.2770. Thank you again and I look forward to seeing you all in 2023. Have a wonderful and peaceful holiday.

A recipe to add to Holiday Cheer from our Directors!

Cheddar Corn Chowder

  • 8 ounces bacon, chopped
  • 1/4 cup good olive oil
  • 6 cups chopped yellow onions (4 large onions)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 12 cups chicken stock, preferably homemade
  • 6 cups medium-diced white boiling potatoes, unpeeled (2 pounds)
  • 10 cups corn kernels, fresh (10 ears) or frozen (3 pounds)
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 1/2 pound sharp white Cheddar cheese, grated

In a large stockpot on medium-high heat, cook the bacon and olive oil until the bacon is crisp, about 5 minutes. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and reserve. Reduce the heat to medium, add the onions and butter to the fat, and cook for 10 minutes, until the onions are translucent.

Stir in the flour, salt, pepper, and turmeric and cook for 3 minutes. Add the chicken stock and potatoes, bring to a boil, and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes, until the potatoes are tender. If using fresh corn, cut the kernels off the cobs and blanch the kernels for 3 minutes in boiling salted water. Drain. (If using frozen corn, you can skip this step.) Add the corn to the soup, then add the half-and-half and Cheddar. Cook for 5 more minutes, until the cheese is melted. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve hot with a garnish of bacon.
