1, Introducing HIMSS Michigan Board members who will serve for the fiscal year, 2021-2022.

The following Board members will take their new positions beginning July 1, 2021, as the new fiscal year begins:

• Janey Joffee, MBA, CPHQ, Director of Population Health, Upper Peninsula Health Plan, joins Programs,

2. Board Members Participating in HIMSS21 Conference

The conference can be overwhelming to first-time attendees.  The Circle Ambassador plays a vital role to assist attendees navigate the conference and is assigned by program track.  Board member, Lindsey J. Weeks, will be a “Circle Ambassador” to assist attendees who have signed up for the Patient Engagement track of sessions.

August 9, 1:50 – 2:30 pm – Exploring the use of digital technology and data as enhanced entry points for patient experience and empowerment to achieve self-actualized patients

Lindsey J. Weeks, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan HIE Pay-for-Performance and Telehealth/Innovation, will be presenting at the HIMSS21 Patient Experience & Consumerization Forum (Location: Wynn)

Session Summary

The collaboration discussed in this session began with a simple premise: high risk patients suffering from chronic conditions need to know what symptoms to look for and understand the best way to communicate symptoms with their care team. Current technology, care processes, and patient engagement strategies do not appropriately enable patient empowerment.

To address this challenge, a PO, Payer, HIE, and telehealth vendor are collectively innovating to build a sustainable care model that focuses on patient education and engagement-creating the self-actualized patient. The collaboration—incentivized by the state’s largest Payer—leverages advanced health information exchange services and telehealth technologies to promote and enable patient engagement in chronic symptom management, strengthen patient-provider connectivity, and efficiently drive increased use of transitions of care (TOC) visits.

Providers identify high-risk patients and the telehealth platform provides them with easily-consumable education materials designed with the dual goal of addressing patient literacy and education. The telehealth platform also streamlines access to ADT notifications via the statewide HIE, enabling providers to track inpatient hospital and ED utilization in real-time and connect with patients in a timely fashion.

This collaboration supports lower ED utilization, reduces readmissions, and improves patient self-management and experience of care.

August 10, 4-5 pm - Experiences With a FHIR Ecosystem Platform's Queryable APIs

Helen Hill, Director of Public-Private Initiatives at South East Michigan Health Information Exchange (SEMHIE) will be presenting in this session. (Location: Ceasar’s, Summit 211) 

Session Summary

To close the information gaps that lead to workflow problems in healthcare, the health IT industry needs sophisticated capabilities to query and combine information from multiple target sources. To meet this need, this advanced session—brought forward by a new collaboration between a HIMSS chapter, an interoperability startup and an academic institution—will show how a multisource fast healthcare interoperability resource (FHIR) ecosystem simulation platform can support the creation and sharing of complex, multitarget FHIR queries. With a focus on challenging information needs arising in the areas of nursing practice, medication management and social determinants of health, we will demonstrate reliable, shareable technical mechanisms to query and combine a host of FHIR data from multiple sources to drive better decision-making in light of more comprehensive and complete information views.

August 11, 4-5 pm – Infrastructure and Incentives: Advancing HIE Innovation

Session Summary

This session will explore how, without a state mandate, a state can build partnerships to form a foundation for advanced health information exchange (HIE). We will use Michigan’s story as a case study: Michigan Health Information Network (MiHIN), the state-designated entity for HIE, partnered with the state’s largest payer, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, to facilitate participation in the statewide HIE network by leveraging the collaborative foundation of Blue Cross’ Physician Group Incentive Program. By combining payer incentives with MiHIN’s Use Case Factory™ process and legal framework, the state was able to achieve increased participation, increased data exchange, and better-quality data, which have led to numerous opportunities, from advanced HIE to telehealth, to innovate across the state. While every state’s landscape is unique, and Michigan’s model is not a one-size-fits-all blueprint, this presentation will offer actionable, applicable how-tos and takeaways that can be implemented in myriad HIE landscapes.

Summary [Note: This is a pre-recorded session with live moderator, Dr. Stalburg, to address questions at the end of the session.]

Faculty from the Health Infrastructures & Learning Systems (HILS) program explore the real-world problem of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest as a mechanism for understanding the concept of a Learning Health System, which takes a constant flow of data and analytics and harnesses it to transform medical system innovations.  They also share how HILS is working to develop a workforce grounded in this science that can change the future of healthcare.

Speaker Biography

Dr. Stalburg completed her medical school and residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan. She attained a Master of Arts in higher education and post-secondary education from the School of Education at the University of Michigan in 2006. Her academic interest is in the pedagogy of teaching and training others to teach as well as online education. She has a long-standing online course on both the Coursera and FutureLearn platforms. Dr. Stalburg is involved in medical education across the continuum of undergraduate and graduate medical training. She also maintains a busy clinical practice in general obstetrics and gynecology. Nationally, Dr. Stalburg serves on a number of committees for the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Association of Medical Colleges.

Summary

Ready to Launch: From Concept to Reality is a physician organization sponsored virtual HIE conference that will highlight the boots-on-the-ground efforts of practices and providers across Michigan.

Conference attendees will hear HIE success stories from various stakeholders throughout the state, and how local initiatives continue to shape the healthcare community. They will gain insights into advanced healthcare information exchange and how it has been adopted by various physician organizations and their member practices. Participating physician organizations will share stories about their work supporting health information exchange, interoperability and current initiatives and achievements to optimize healthcare services and product solutions.

Speakers will explore how the changing landscape for health information exchange is shaping opportunities for all stakeholders to reevaluate the use of ever more fluid electronic health data to facilitate transformation initiatives and their own success with business goals.

As an in-kind sponsor for the conference, the HIMSS Michigan Chapter will host a virtual program for students and young professions on Day 2 of the event. In addition to general education sessions, attendees will have opportunities to network with industry professionals and participate in professional development sessions and career fair.
