In the News…

On July 12, 2019, a news release from the state identified that Dr. Michael Zaroukian has been appointed to the Michigan Health Information Technology Commission. Many of you may remember Dr. Zaroukian’s contributions to HIMSS including as past chair of the HIMSS Board of Directors and past chair of the HIMSS North America Board of Directors. Congratulations, Dr. Zaroukian, on this new position providing the state of Michigan with his expertise and enthusiasm for Health Information Technology!

“Michael H. Zaroukian, of Okemos, is the vice president, chief medical information officer, and chief transformation officer for Sparrow Health System and a professor emeritus at the Michigan State University Department of Medicine. He earned his Doctor of Medicine and Ph.D. in Microbiology from Michigan State University. Dr. Zaroukian is appointed to succeed Michael Chrissos, whose term expires August 3, 2019, to represent doctors of medicine for a term commencing August 4, 2019 and expiring August 3, 2023.

The Health Information Technology Commission was created to facilitate and promote the design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of interoperable health care information infrastructure in this state.

These appointments are not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate. “


Chapter Receives HIMSS Presidential Level Chapter Designation for the Advocacy Program

Most recently, the Michigan Chapter of HIMSS was informed that it has again received the designation of a Presidential Level Chapter specifically for volunteer efforts toward Advocacy and Public Policy. Spearheading the Michigan Chapter level efforts as well as contributing to a variety of related national efforts, Board member, Helen L. Hill, FHIMSS, has been instrumental in her contributions.

We would like to thank Ms. Hill for her contributions as the current Board Director Public Policy / Advocacy as well as previous Chapter Leader of the Year, awardee of both John A. Page Distinguished Fellows Service Award and Chapter Advocate of the Year. She is a Past-President (2002-2006) of the MI Chapter of HIMSS having founded the chapter in 2000 and serving as its first president in 2002. Ms. Hill has been very active on a variety of HIMSS North America committees and work groups including, but not limited to: CAR representative (2002-present), HIMSS Public Policy Committee , Chair HIMSS Legislative-Regulatory Committee, Co-Chair HIMSS RHIO Committee, Co-Chair HIMSS HIE Committee, Chair HIMSS Interoperability & Standards Committee, member HIMSS Standards Advisory Workgroup and HIMSS Technical Guidance for Interoperability Work Group (2015- present) and Liaison to the Kantara Initiative Identity Assurance Work Group and its predecessor, the Liberty Alliance).

You can join the Advocacy team’s efforts to improve Healthcare IT/HIE and learn more about important on-going Advocacy and Public Policy initiatives in Michigan and their relationship to national efforts as well as initiatives. We encourage you to volunteer regarding Advocacy today. If you are interested, we would welcome any questions to join these important volunteer efforts.
 


More Details About the MI HIMSS Annual Fall Conference
