2018 was full of a many new firsts for our Chapter and I am truly looking forward to all that 2019 has in store for us. It has been a busy few months and we have several milestones to celebrate. Here are some highlights:

  • Over 50 members joined us for the Fall Social Event at the new Guinness Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House. This facility is state of the art and a first for the US.

  • Many of you joined us ‘On the Farm’ for our Family Event in September; we were so honored to meet your support system and enjoy some apple cider, a hay-ride and get some pumpkins.

  • Named our Charity Partner - Helping Up Mission

  • In November, we honored Ms. Tressa Springmann, SVP & CIO Lifebridge Health as the 2018 Extraordinary Women Leader

  • The Inaugural Women in Health IT Event was a huge hit. 200+ leaders gathered together for an evening of networking, dining and gaining insight from local executives. We were delighted to have the keynote address delivered by Stephanie Reel, CIO and SVP; Vice Provost, Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine. We also drew upon the experiences of other successful women health care executives to share leadership insight by facilitating breakout sessions - Crucial Conversation Techniques, Developing Winning Strategy, Effective C-Suite Conversations, Negotiating the Desired Outcome and more.

  • Many members joined us for our Holiday Social Event, open to both Maryland and DC/VA Chapters, held at Union Jack’s British Pub at Rio Center in Gaithersburg, MD.

  • As we seek to provide additional support to our members around the unique programs/policies in Maryland - we hosted our Winter Educational event on “ Total Cost of Care”.  An opportunity for 150+ leaders that came together to further explore Maryland’s unique, value based health care transformation leveraging our innovative Total Cost of Care model. Speakers shared benefits and unique components of the program, some organizational lessons learned on resource alignment, as well as how CRISP data is helping measure the value.

  • 125 legislators, members and new members gathered in Annapolis at the start of the legislative session for our Annual Advocacy Event.  Our theme this year was "Health IT: Access to Information – Access to Care"

  • Over 150 members from Virginia & Maryland joined our Chapter Reception at the Global HIMSS19 Conference in February; special thanks to Nuance for hosting us!

Women in Health IT

The Maryland Health Information Management System Society (HIMSS) Chapter announced the recipient of the MDHIMSS Extraordinary Women Leaders in Health IT Award during their inaugural Women in Health IT event, held at the BWI Westin in November 2018. With over 200 attendees present - Tressa Springmann, Senior Vice President & Chief Information Officer at LifeBridge Health, was recognized for her transformational leadership, demonstration of effectively using information and technology in support of the strategic initiatives of her organization and within our local communities, and her dedication in mentoring women in this industry. “We were impressed with the number of nominations for the Women Leader in Health IT Award.  The ability to recognize extraordinary women leaders in our community is important and we are delighted to highlight Tressa for all her accomplishments and contributions not only to healthcare, but to our culture” said Anna Schoenbaum, Chair of Professional Development for the Maryland HIMSS Chapter and the Enterprise Director of Clinical Systems at the University of Maryland Medical System.

In our mission to improve health through the best use of information and technology, HIMSS is committed to advancing the careers of high-performing professionals. The HIMSS Women in Health IT Roundtable and Maryland Chapter work to address the gender gap in health information and technology, and the need for more community, resources and recognition of women who have made a difference sector-wide.

“We know that women are minorities in the boardroom and c-suite and even more so within the technology industry.  The HIMSS Women in Health IT is a global roundtable that we are pleased to bring locally. Tressa exemplifies the qualities of an extraordinary leader and has remained a constant force for Health IT advocacy in Maryland for many years; it’s a privilege to honor her.” Said Karen Marie Wilding President of the Maryland HIMSS Chapter and Senior Director of Quality & Value Based Care at UMMS.  “Tressa realizes the role of CIO should be part of driving the strategic decision-making process. As one of the largest and most comprehensive providers of health-related services to the people of Maryland, LifeBridge Health draws on Tressa’s expertise and leadership to help us chart a trajectory of continued growth and success.” said Neil Meltzer, President & CEO of LifeBridge Health.

Attendees were moved by the keynote address, delivered by Stephanie Reel, CIO and Senior Vice President; Vice Provost, Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine.

During Fall of 2018, MD HIMSS Networking and Leadership committee hosted Chris Donovan, Executive Director Enterprise Analytics at Cleveland Clinic, to speak at our invitation-only CXO Roundtable Discussion “Operationalizing Analytics” on Monday, September 17, at Anne Arundel Medical Center’s Doordan Institute.

The event afforded a great opportunity for local area CXOs to engage with someone who is leading the vanguard of health IT analytics, with the goal of understanding how to export the success of Cleveland Clinic to Maryland healthcare provider facilities.  Discussion was lively and engaging, with CXO representation from around the state. MD HIMSS continues to look for high-impact thought leaders in health IT to give Maryland CXOs inspiration to do more.

Community Outreach

We are thrilled to announce the Charity Program recipient for 2018-2019 as Helping Up Mission (HUM), a Greater Baltimore nonprofit providing hope to people experiencing homelessness, poverty or addiction by meeting their physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs.

During the recent Maryland HIMSS Educational Event, the Community Outreach Program Committee presented Martha Robison, Philanthropy Officer and Brett Hartnett, Education and Workforce Development Administrator and former HUM participant, with the news that their organization was selected to receive $2,500 for educational software preparing men to obtain their Maryland High School diploma (GED prep) and procure tablets for the purpose of men re-entering the workforce becoming proficient with the most up-to-date technology.

“As an organization supporting Maryland’s healthcare transformation and the expansion of access to quality care, the Maryland HIMSS Community Outreach Program Committee felt strongly about funding an association whose mission was to assist individuals with their overall health needs,” shared Kyle Swarts, Board Member and Chair, Community Outreach Committee, Maryland HIMSS Chapter. “In a world where we are fighting battles of addiction, poverty and homelessness, we are certain that this donation will help the hundreds who participate in the Helping Up Mission experience.”

“Bridging the gap of healthcare for those in need is a challenge; we have a great responsibility to improve the overall health of our community.  With our commitment to promote and collaborate grassroots efforts that advance health with the use of technology, Maryland HIMSS is hoping to make an impact on those men and women who land in the helping hands at Helping Up Mission,” stated Karen Marie Wilding, President, Maryland HIMSS Chapter.

“We are beyond grateful for the generous donation from Maryland HIMSS.  Our mission is transformation, and we believe that the steady stream of support we receive allows Helping Up Mission to grow strategically – ensuring ever more men and women will receive integrated healthcare, basic life needs, counseling and education, workforce training and life skills,” says Martha Robison, Philanthropy Officer, Helping Up Mission. “With this gift, we will experience increased capacity in the number of patients served, improved health care outcomes, and improved client outcomes in drug and alcohol recovery.”

The Maryland Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) mission and vision aligns to the core values and attributes of HUM. Consistent with our local and national agenda, HUM assists with:

  • Supporting Healthcare Transformation

  • Expanding Access to High Quality Care

  • Increasing Economic Opportunity

Advocacy

This year, our theme for the annual Advocacy Day in Annapolis Maryland was: “Health IT: Access to Information – Access to Care".  This year’s event focused on how access to the right information at the right time can help provide access to care. We explored a number of policy-related topics including those related to telehealth, virtual care, the future of digital health in Maryland, coordinated care, and the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program.

Attendees had the opportunity to meet and network with invited legislators from the Maryland House of Delegates and Senate during our evening event.

This years' 90-day legislative session is set to have a fast start; as of Jan. 9th, with numerous bills already being drafted for introduction; many that will impact healthcare. Looking ahead, we are always seeking members to join us in being a resource to our legislators by helping to further educate and provide resourceful information related to healthcare IT.

Johns Hopkins policy team provided perspectives on Health IT challenges and opportunities.  Thanks to Dwight Raum, VP of Information Technology & Chief Technology Officer, Johns Hopkins Health System and Johns Hopkins University and Aalok Shah, Director of Product Management for the Johns Hopkins inHealth Precision Medicine Initiative for leading this for us. Sally McMillan Guy, Associate Director of State Affairs provided insights around Public Policy Pathways to Promoting Telemedicine in Maryland and Dr. Ingrid Zimmer-Galler, Associate Professor, Medical Director of Telemedicine shared the Medical View: Telemedicine Use Cases for Underserved Maryland Populations.

Of interest to many, Telehealth from the Front Lines: Public School Nursing was a session hosted by Diann Rocha, MSN, RN, HCPSS Cluster Nurse / Telehealth RN, Ducketts Lane Elementary School and Sharon Hobson, MSN, CPNP-PC – School Health Programs Administrator, Howard County Health Department.

Finally, we had a formidable reaction panel on policy opportunities to create better access to information and better access to care via Health IT.  The below individuals provided invaluable insights to all attendees.

  • Dr. Ross Martin, Facilitator

  • Craig Behm, Executive Director, CRISP Maryland

  • Kate Jackson, Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Manager, Maryland Department of Health

  • Nicole Majewski, MHCC Electronic Prescription Records System Workgroup, Maryland Health Care Commission

  • Sharon Rodriguez, Portfolio Manager, MedStar Telehealth Innovation Center (MTIC)

  • Colin Ward - VP of Population Health and Clinical Integration, Upper Chesapeake Health System
