April 2016 Austin HIMSS Newsletter

Message from the President > >

Hello Chapter Members,

For those of you who made it to the Tuesday lunch & learn I'm sure you were just as impressed with the speaker and the topic as I was. Dr. Vishwanath's presentation on high precision predictive analytics was fantastic. He was running short on time but the audience agreed to forego the typical 15 min Q&A so he could finish his discussion. I was thankful to him to not only make the time to speak with the chapter, but he made himself available for questions after the session was over. Also, a sincere thank you to John Broadous from Luna Data Solutions for sponsoring the lunch at the event.

Last week was National Volunteer Week. I can't stress enough how important volunteerism is with this chapter. The Austin HIMSS Board and other chapter members spend a considerable amount of time keeping this chapter operating at a high tempo. We are very lucky to have such a great group of healthcare IT professionals be involved with this chapter.  General James Doolittle famously said "There is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer." Volunteering is a good habit to get into. I wanted to mention each of our chapter volunteers:

Past President:  Lillian Prince
Secretary: Josh Berman
Treasurer:  Jake Bilich
Social Events: Emma Cartmell *Also a TX Regional HIMSS conference volunteer
Advocacy:  Chuck Durant
Communications: Dawn Deakin
Membership: Kristin Norton *Also a TX Regional HIMSS conference volunteer
Sponsorship:  Shannon Vogel *Also a HIMSS National Chapter Task Force volunteer supporting other HIMSS chapter leaders
Student Liasion:  Megan Anderson

TX HIMSS Regional planning committee volunteers:
Erin Scales - Program Chair
Anne Foley - Program Committee
Jeff Nordyke - Finance Chair

If you are interested in seeking volunteer opportunities within the chapter please reach out to me directly at austin.president@himsschapter.org. One simple activity you can do without formally volunteering would be to promote the Austin HIMSS chapter within your organization and professional network. Forwarding the monthly newsletter is a great way to spark interest.

The TX HIMSS Regional conference is less than a month away.  It will be May 12-13th at the Houston Westin Galleria. Information and registration can be found at www.himssregional.com. Last year's TX regional event was held here in Austin and we hosted over 700 healthcare IT professionals. The Houston event this year is shaping up to have similar attendance. I think you'll be impressed with the list of topics and speakers that will be presenting.

Lastly, our next lunch & learn will be May 10th. David Smith from SocialCare will discuss "The Future of Work".

All the best,

Doug Burkott, FHIMSS
