To kick off educational programming for 2021, a number of chapter member volunteers are co-facilitating a virtually hosted CPHIMS/CAHIMS exam review series. HIMSS certification has, since its inception been offered to applicants with university preparation, but eligibility has expanded in 2020 to recognize the preparedness of individuals with significant experience in health and information sciences. As a new addition in 2020, exam eligibility now is extended to individuals with 10 or more years working in information and management systems, with at least 8 in a healthcare setting, and no requirement for a bachelor or graduate degree.

What is the difference between CAHIMS (Certified Associate in Health and Information Management Systems) and CPHIMS/ CPHIMS-CA (Certified Professional in Health and Information Management Systems, with optional Canadian supplement) preparation?

Both of these exams cover three domains of competence in health information and management systems: general information technology and the healthcare environment, systems, and administration.  Within these domains, the CPHIMS exam competencies focus on the execution of leadership and management, such as the development and execution of strategic plans and budgets.  In comparison, the CAHIMS exam competencies focus on supporting leadership and management in health information systems. The CAHIMS certification, which focuses on more general, foundational competencies, is an opportunity for someone new to the field of clinical informatics or with less information technology experience to grow their industry knowledge.

With significant growth in the implementation and adoption of digital health and information systems in our territory, the CPHIMS (Certified Professional in Health and Information Management Systems) and CPHIMS-CA (with Canadian supplement) certifications are the most appropriate certification for individuals with significant experience and advanced industry knowledge to demonstrate your professional competencies.

The review session programming offered by the HIMSS Chapter in winter 2021 will be geared towards the CPHIMS-CA certification competencies, and incorporate content that is relevant to participants seeking CAHIMS certification.  The review session is an excellent adjunct to your own individual exam study preparation, which can be facilitated using reference texts and candidate handbooks available from HIMSS and Digital Health Canada.  The review session and tools that will be provided as a participant through the Chapter can assist you in identifying strengths and areas of focus in your exam preparation.

You do not have to be a HIMSS member to obtain certification. However, members are eligible for discounts from HIMSS on review guides, practice exam fees, and exam registration fees.

Chapter members and leaders who are current certificate holders share content that reflects the exam competencies and reference texts, while providing mentorship and leadership to interested participants.

Make your mark this new year, and demonstrate your commitment to professional excellence by achieving your HIMSS certification.
