Downtime & Disaster Planning for Inpatient Nurses

Peggy Schneck BSN, RN is currently serving as a Clinical Instructor in the Office of Nursing Informatics at the Cleveland Clinic.   She transitioned to Nursing Informatics after a long career as an Emergency Department nurse and spent six years as a Nursing Informatics Liaison before transitioning to the instructor role.  She is committed to helping front line nursing staff incorporate technology to enhance their nursing practice. She does this by participating on project teams and choosing and developing the appropriate training.   Most recently, Peggy has developed an online training module focusing on system downtime for inpatient nursing staff including RN, LPNs, Health Unit Coordinators and unlicensed assistive personnel. 

Kim Svoboda MBA, BSN, RN-BC is the Director of Epic Acute & Ambulatory Applications at The MetroHeath System.  She has a BSN in Nursing from The Ohio State University and an MBA from Cleveland State University.  She began her career as a clinical nurse in 1999, became board certified in Nursing Informatics in 2004 and has worked for the past five years in informatics and IT leadership.

Darlene Cherry - Selesnik is the Manager of Clinical Informatics Training at MetroHealth Medical Center.  Darlene holds a BSN from Kent State University and is a member of ONIO and HIMSS.  Darlene brings 23 years of clinical nursing experience and has been in Informatics at MetroHealth for 4 years.

MetroHealth is an essential health system committed to providing health care to everyone in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, and improving the health of the community overall. MetroHealth was recently awarded the Davies Award after achieving HIMSS Stage 7 for both Ambulatory and Hospital in 2015. The Informatics Training team provides EMR training and curriculum development for all clinical staff roles, expansions, and new application implementation.  In addition the team provides Go Live support and 24x7 on call support for all Clinical applications

Amy Klinger, BSN, RN is a Systems Administrator in the Nursing Informatics Department at Cleveland Clinic Akron General. Amy has been at Akron General for the past 8 years where she began her nursing career on a surgical GYN/GU/Plastics unit.  For the past five and a half years, her focus has been in Nursing Informatics.  Amy has been actively involved in the implementation of McKesson’s electronic order entry as well as the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of the computerized provider order entry system. 

Amy earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Walsh University in April 2008 and is an active member of the Phi Eta chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International.

Joe Bernardo, ADN, RN is a Systems Administrator in the Nursing Informatics Department at Cleveland Clinic Akron General. Joe’s early nursing career has been focused on the cardiovascular patient, having worked on both the cardiac step-down and heart failure unit.  His knowledge of the clinical workflow and the integration of the EHR is an asset to his current role as an educator and trainer.  Joe also serves as the Service Request Process Owner for the IT Service Management software and has obtained his Information Technology Infrastructure Library Certification in 2015.  Joe continues to define, design and implement automated workflows that improve upon the current processes within IT.

Jill Evans MSN, RN-BC is Director of Clinical Informatics for the MetroHealth System.  She received her MSN from Walden University and belongs to the ONIO, ANIA, and HIMSS. Jill has been in Informatics at MetroHealth for 5 years and was recently promoted to Director in 2016. She worked on various projects including BCMA, Evidence-based Order Set & Care Plans, HIMSS Stage 7 Blood & Breastmilk scanning, and Core Measure Reporting

Suzanne Fink, MSN, RN, CCRN serves as Clinical Analyst for the Clinical Solutions Center (CSC) at Cleveland Clinic where she has been an employee in various roles for the past ten years.  Her present focus, and that of the CSC, is the delivery of innovative solutions to pressing clinical issues through an iterative, agile design process that empowers end-users.  A proud advocate for nursing and those at the front line of patient care, Suzanne leverages her experience as a certified critical care nurse and enjoys collaboration with a multitude of professionals. Developments within the CSC include the launch of eHospital (Cleveland Clinic Health System’s tele-health initiative), a home-grown mobile application (Iris Mobile) to enable staff access to patient data on-the-go and a multitude of clinical workflow optimizations. This year, as a partner with Nursing Informatics, Suzanne participated in the expansion of a dynamic EMR-driven workflow focused on early-warning for patients experiencing acute decompensation.  She has also helped to offer alternative technical solutions to the management of patients with sepsis, all with a goal toward “no failure to rescue.”  A member of HIMSS, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the Ohio Nurses Association Suzanne enjoys the intense challenge of immersion in an ever changing healthcare environment.

Daniel C. Rausch, BSN, RN is a Sr. Application Analyst and MLM Knowledge Engineer at University Hospitals.   He specializes in the design and build of clinical decisions support in UHCare (Allscripts Sunrise product) through the use of Medical Logic Modules (MLMs).  Daniel designs workflows and MLMs to help guide clinicians to the best evidence based care for their patients and assist in compliance across the UH System.  His work includes Sepsis alerting, antimicrobial stewardship, pediatric rehydration protocols and many more.  He has presented his work to hospitals around the world at the Allscripts Client Experience Conference in 2013 and 2014 and presented multiple webinars.  Daniel has a history at UH as a pediatric nurse at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.  He also teaches pediatric nursing for Cleveland State University and previously for Cuyahoga Community College and Kent State University.

Ted McAllen, MBA, BSN, RN is the Director of Nursing Informatics at Cleveland Clinic Akron General.  Ted is also Adjunct Faculty at Kent State University School of Nursing Graduate and Undergraduate programs where he teaches nursing informatics.  Ted has been at Akron General for eight years and has been actively involved in leading and facilitating the nursing division through the transitions of multiple McKesson upgrades and product optimizations as well as the implementation and transition of McKesson to Epic (Spring 2017). 

Ted has his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Kent State University, his Master of Business Administration from Case Western Reserve University and his Doctor of Nursing Practice, in May 2016, from Waynesburg University.

Carol Santschi, MSN, RN-BC, CNOR (E) is a Systems Administrator in the Nursing Informatics Department at Cleveland Clinic Akron General. Carol’s career focus has been predominantly in surgical suite but for the past six years her focus has been in Nursing Informatics.  Carol obtained her MSN in Nursing Informatics from Walden University in February 2012 and became certified in Nursing Informatics through the American Nurses Credentialing Center later that year.  Carol obtained her Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification and works on projects to reduce duplication and improve workflows for nursing staff. Carol designed and implemented the Nursing Informatics Council at her organization 2012 and continues to work with the council to advance the roles and meet the strategic goals of the organization.
