Interoperability: It’s not just the technology
HIMSS defines interoperability as “the ability of different information systems, devices and applications (systems) to access, exchange, integrate and cooperatively use data in a coordinated manner, within and across organizational, regional and national boundaries, to provide timely and seamless portability of information and optimize the health of individuals and populations globally.” Much of the research and guidance supporting interoperability focuses on the various data and technology standards.
Many healthcare IT leaders are of the opinion that meeting the technology requirements of interoperability is relatively straightforward. They see bigger challenges with the complex processes, relationships and contracts between organizations, healthcare providers and 3rd party providers. Join us as they host a discussion about the “other” components of interoperability.
Learning Objectives:
- The technology standards of interoperability have been defined and are mechanical in nature.
- The relationship and responsibilities of contracted services (PICU,NICU, ER, Cardiology, Neurology) must be defined and documented.
- The challenges of data ownership and expectations of data exchange must be included in any contract or business agreement.
