The Covid-19 pandemic created unprecedented healthcare system challenges and transformative change. We saw rapid acceleration of the technology we use, changes to the way in which we deliver care and to the policies that govern healthcare.  New England HIMSS is happy to be back in person for our annual spring conference.  Join us to explore The Progression of the Health IT Ecosystem - What does the Future Hold?

The New England HIMSS annual spring conference will take place in Norwood, MA on Thursday May 12th from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with a networking reception immediately to follow.

Our day will star with our opening keynote panel, From Talk to Collective Action – Building a Foundation for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.  Followed by two conference tracks and 8 sessions to choose from and we will round out our day with a closing keynote and a networking reception immediately to follow. Continuing Education Credits for Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses and Pharmacists will be offered along with CPHIMS credits.

New England HIMSS aims to provide our student members with knowledge and resources to expand their leadership skills.  During our annual spring conference, we will be hosting a student poster contest providing our student members an opportunity to showcase their research to our past president’s club.  We will also be announcing the winner of our 2021-2022 New England HIMSS E Ink Innovation Scholarship at the event.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of providers, nurses, pharmacists and allied healthcare professionals and will seek to identify mechanisms to address and mitigate the need for innovative, state-of-the-art digital healthcare equity technology solutions via discussion of DE&I strategy, initiatives, and personal and organizational experience as related to the pandemic, health equity, and SDOH along with identification of interoperability standards that may contribute to the advancement for the representation of data for SDOH as well as outcomes tracking analysis through real-world case examples.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Define and discuss DE&I strategy, initiatives, and personal and organizational experience as related to the pandemic, health equity, and SDOH
  • Discuss and identify mechanisms to address and mitigate the need for innovative, state-of-the-art digital healthcare equity technology solutions
  • Explore and evaluate how interoperability standards and non-proprietary technologies can contribute to EHR optimization, efficiency, and interprofessional communication and collaboration, which is essential to quality, patient-centered care.

Ronelle is a Massachusetts native and graduate of Northeastern University with a doctorate in pharmacy. She has worked in a variety of roles throughout tenure as part of the Mass General Brigham (MGB) family with her current position being a Senior Clinical Decision Support Application Coordinator for the Epic electronic health record at MGB Digital eCare in Boston. With a background in clinical pharmacy and knowledge management, she has worked within the MGB organization since 2006. She is certified in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion through the American Society of Health-System Pharmacy (ASHP). At MGB, Ronelle also serves as the co-chair of the Digital Health Diversity Equity and Inclusion Council and Project Interrupt Committee where she works to strengthen cultural awareness and foster a sense of community through inclusivity and corporate citizenship.

Laura Marquez

Assistant Vice President IT Applications, UConn Health

Laura Marquez brings more than 20 years of healthcare experience leading dynamic teams, driving innovation, and bringing out the best in people by tapping into their strengths. She has shared ideas to improve the workplace with empathy as a TEDx speaker, and is regarded as a servant leader with a strong focus on the patient experience.

Karen Serrago

Chief Information Officer at Community Technology Cooperative (CTC)

Karen is currently the Chief Information Officer at Community Technology Cooperative (CTC) which is a subsidiary of Community Care Cooperative (C3). CTC is currently implementing Epic Systems across a cohort of FQHC’s in Massachusetts. Prior to her role at CTC, Karen worked at the Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) as a Director of Epic Applications and Chair of the Telehealth Committee. Formerly, Karen held positions at Partners Healthcare as a Project Manager for the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Epic Implementation as well as consulting roles in other EHR implementations. She is certified in multiple Epic applications and holds a Masters Degree in Health Informatics and Management.

Caroline Yang, MD

Brigham and Women's Hospital

Caroline Yang is an attending hospitalist physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital interested in the intersection of clinical care, policy, and innovation within healthcare. She is Faculty at Harvard Medical School and attends on the inpatient service. She also cares for patients in Brigham's Home Hospital Program, which allows patients to be cared for in the home utilizing platform-based technologies that integrate remote monitoring, team communication, and virtual visits/telehealth.

Susan Carman

VP/CIO Mohawk Valley Health System

Susan has been in the Healthcare Information Technology and Informatics industry for a total of 28 years. Before becoming the VP/CIO of Mohawk Health System, she served as the Chief Information Officer at UHS. She served as the VP of Information Technology at Wingate Healthcare and spent 15 years of her career at Medical Information Technology (MEDITECH) implementing Electronic Medical Records in the US and Canada. She is a certified Project Manager (PMP)and a CHIME certified CIO (CHCIO).

Tonya Hongsermeier, MD MBA

Dr. Hongsemeier leads Elimu's product vision, design and adoption strategies. Prior to Elimushe held senior leadership roles in research, standards development, clinical knowledge management and EHR deployment at Beth Israel Lahey Health, Partners Healthcare, Cerner and InterQual. She held leadership roles on the Clinical Decision Support Consortium project, Advancing Clinical Decision Support project, Semantic Web Healthcare-Life Sciences SIG at the W3C and Health eDecisions Initiative.

 

James Shalaby

Pharm D, Elimu Informatics

 

Jim leads Elimu's Clinical Informatics vision and strategy. Prior to Elimu, Jim founded PSMI Consulting in 2005, a clinical informatics firm recognized for their expertise in CDS, standards and clinical content. Jim has consulted to many Fortune 500 companies, health systems and medical societies and is a nationally recognized expert in interoperability standards. He has served most recently as the senior SME for the ONC medication interoperability efforts and the Gravity Project.

Interoperability Program Director, Drummond

John's 29 year career in healthcare IT draws on experiences with MEDITECH, Commvault, Berkeley Research Group and as an independent consultant before joining Drummond in 2019. Currently John is responsible for the oversight of an ONC grant for EHR surveillance as well as supporting the healthcare compliance and advisory services business units in their Real World Testing and Comprehensive HL7 FHIR certification programs. John has been an adjunct faculty member at Endicott College since 2009.

Matthew Moss

Mathew joined NEDS in 2014 as the Chief Information Officer and Senior Vice President. Mathew has a Bachelor of Science degree from Ithaca College in Administration of Health Services and Master’s degree in Information Technology from Harvard University’s Extension School. Prior to NEDS, Mathew spent 20 years working for hospitals and health systems’ information services departments, most recently at South Shore Hospital. He has a specific expertise in project management, information security, integration, and analytics. Mathew is a member of College of Healthcare Management Information Management Executives.

Jessica has been at NEDS for seven years and has also worked at Mass General Brigham and GE. She has been working on integration projects though out New England. She has degrees from Providence College and Northeastern University.

Chris is a results-oriented healthcare professional with over 25 years of Cerner Revenue Cycle experience. His work has included but not limited to Cerner Charge Services, charge capture, chargemaster, denials management, billing compliance, and decision support activities. Chris has extensive experience with Cerner CDM cleanup and consolidation projects based on recent Cerner and nThrive implementations at CHI, Dignity Health, and the UNM Health System.

Dr. Oscar Bukstein

Boston Children's Hospital

Dr Bukstein attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and has a master’s degree in public health from the UT-Houston. He trained at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and stayed on the faculty there for 23 years and achieved the rank of Professor of Psychiatry. Prior to coming to Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) in March 2016, Dr Bukstein spent several years in Houston, Texas at the University of Texas (UT) Health Science Center in Houston where he was Professor of Psychiatry and Chief of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and at DePelchin Children’s Center where he was Medical Director. At BCH, he is Vice-Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Director of the Psychiatry Outpatient Services. He is Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is board certified in psychiatry, and child and adolescent psychiatry and has over 30 years of practice experience with particular clinical and research expertise in treating youth with substance use disorders, and other disruptive behavior disorders. Dr Bukstein has a substantial academic record, having authored or co-authored over 150 papers, chapters, or books and has received funding by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and the National Institute on Child Health and Human Development.

Sumit Sajnani

Health Information Technology Officer (HITO)

 

Sumit Sajnani is the Health IT Officer (HITO) for the State of Connecticut. He is also co-chair for the statewide Health IT Advisory Council (HITAC) which focuses on policy recommendations to advance the state's health IT and health information exchange (HIE) efforts. He is chair of the board of directors of Connie, the state's official HIE which began operations in May 2021.

 

He previously was an infrastructure executive consultant at TechSolutions International. Previously, Sajnani spent over a decade as an executive Project Manager at the State Department of Corrections where he managed several health IT initiatives. He worked as the senior director of IT and eBusiness at ING Americas, now known as Voya Financial. During his time at ING Americas, he led the creation and execution of IT and eBusiness strategy for US Financial Service Lines. In his earlier career, Sajnani was a manger of information technology at McKinsey.

 

 

 

Michael Fine, MD

Chief Health Strategist

Michael Fine, MD has been an advocate for communities, healthcare reform and the care of under-served populations worldwide for 40 years.

His career as a community organizer and family physician has led him to some of the poorest places in the United States, as well as dangerous, war-ravaged communities in third-world countries.

 

His experiences across the globe have enabled him to craft numerous short stories, novels and healthcare policy books about how we can change

Wichie Artu

Health & Data Equity Consultant

Magnetic Fields

Wichie Artu was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico and raised between Ponce and Boston. Since the age of 14, he has worked and volunteered in a myriad of social equity environments: public health initiatives, healthcare delivery programs, health justice committees, and data ethics working groups - among others. Furthermore, Wichie is a professionally trained data warehouse architect, specializing in healthcare industry.

Wichie now lives in Athens, VT where he owns a small farm, "Magnetic Fields", with his partner – Isaac Leslie. We aim to attract and sustain queer and BIPOC farming community through affordable housing, land leasing, community building, culturally relevant food production, and most importantly equity consulting. Wichie’s consultancy expertise is the use of systems design and political organizing when approaching community health including, but not limited to: data systems, supply chains, economic sovereignty – especially in correlation to climate resilience, and addressing the social determinants of health.

Wichie is currently under contract with the Vermont Department of Health, the Vermont Legislature, the Vermont Public Health Institute, and the United Way of Windham County to assess and address health disparities for people who live and work in Vermont. He is also running for VT State Senate wanting to represent Windham County in the Vermont Legislature.
