This program is approved for up to 14 continuing education (CE) hours for use in fulfilling the continuing education requirements of the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information & Management Systems (CPHIMS) the Certified Associate in Healthcare Information & Management Systems (CAHIMS) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) credits which applies to nursing licensure.

Course Description:
This intensive two-day course focuses on current informatics trends and issues. It includes content for Registered Nurses who are interested in becoming American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) board certified Informatics Nurses. Other clinical professionals working in informatics may wish to take the course to become exposed to the course topics.
Axxess Consult Inc. is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation. 14 hours of continuing education credit will be awarded upon completion of this offering. Full attendance at the program is required. This program is approved for up to 14.5 continuing education (CE) hours for use in fulfilling the continuing education requirements of the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information & Management Systems (CPHIMS) and the Certified Associate in Healthcare Information & Management Systems (CAHIMS).

Susan K. Newbold, PhD, RN-BC, FAAN, FHIMSS, CHTS-CP, nursinginformatics@comcast.net, is the Course Director and Consultant in Clinical Informatics, Franklin, TN. Previously she was the Education Lead for the implementation of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) at the Hospital Corporation of America, Nashville, TN. She is uniquely qualified to teach this course as she has experience in the vendor, consulting, academic and hospital world. Dr. Newbold is Board Certified in Nursing Informatics and initiated the first review course in nursing informatics in 1995. In 2001 she won the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing International Technology Award for Knowledge Advancement for this course.
Dr. Newbold earned her PhD and MS in Nursing from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She is co-founder of CARING. Identified as a pioneer in nursing informatics, Susan co-edited five books and has written numerous articles on informatics topics. Susan was a keynote speaker in the first nursing informatics conferences held in Taiwan and Singapore and has consulted in informatics in the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Slovenia, and Taiwan. She is Vice Chair Communications for the International Medical Informatics Association Nursing Informatics Special Interest Group. Susan was selected in the 2013 Class for “Women to Watch” by the Nashville Medical News. Susan is the 2015 Chapter Leader of the Year for HIMSS.
Gwen Holder, MSN, RN-BC, is Director Systems Support Services Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN. Gwen’s clinical background is in medical-surgical nursing and physical/ cognitive rehabilitation nursing. She has also served as assistant manager, unit manager, and director of nursing before making the move to informatics 20 years ago. Gwen has been intimately involved with development, training, implementation and support of various homegrown and commercial electronic systems (CPOE, Nursing Documentation, Bar Code Medication Administration, Electronic Medical Record, Dashboards).
She has presented at the local, regional and national level on informatics related topics and has several informatics and leadership related publications. Gwen has co-led a course on system life cycle design in the Nursing Informatics MSN Program at Vanderbilt School of Nursing and serves as a preceptor for Nursing Informatics Practicum experiences. Gwen is board certified in Nursing Informatics.
