Call To Action

HIMSS16 Call for Proposals
The HIMS16 Call for Proposals (and Reviewers) opens May 1 through June 15, via the HIMSS.org  website.  Share thought leadership with thousands of health professionals. The HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition – health IT’s largest event – is known for its world-class education.  The search is on for thought leaders to present education content at HIMSS16.

Submissions should demonstrate a case study approach on the adoption and optimal use of health IT and management systems. Share insights and expertise with thousands of attendees. Contact Deb Clough, Manager of Annual Conference Education at dclough@himss.org with any questions.

Important Notes

Chapter Leader Workshop Recap
Thank you to those who attended the Chapter Leader Workshop at HIMSS15. There was a slight audio challenge at the HIMSS Spot’s coffee bar, due to the large turnout; however, meaningful conversations were held throughout the workshop.

Takeaways from the sessions, slides, and documents will be made available on the Chapter Leader Resource Area.

2015 Chapter Leader Exchange
Please note that the Chapter Leader Exchange will be held at the HIMSS Innovation Center, in Cleveland, Ohio on July 14 and 15.  Similar to previous years, HIMSS will cover airfare and a one-night stay at the host hotel for one board representative per HIMSS chapter.  HIMSS will contact chapter leadership as more details become available.  Feel free to send any follow-up questions to Chapter Staff.

HIMSS Veterans Career Services Sponsorship Program
Thank you to our 16 HIMSS chapters below who sponsored full travel honorariums as part of the HIMSS Veterans Career Services Initiative.  These guests are American veterans, transitioning service members and eligible military spouses/survivors (not currently employed in a HIT role). Chapters paid up to $1,800 for hotel, lodging and per diem expenses for these honored guests.  HIMSS also covered their registration to attend the Veterans Career Services Boot Camp and full HIMSS15 conference.

Next year, the HIMSS Veterans Career Services Sponsorship Program plans to offer similar compensation for veterans, and HIMSS is always looking for chapter sponsorship.  Keep an eye out for future information as call for applications will begin in July 2015.

Chapter Website Update
There will be continued training, feedback and opportunities to work together to improve on and build the sites. Phase 2 is in the hands of Result Direct and we are working to secure the Statement of Work to begin.  In addition, the CLRA.himsschapter.org will contain the materials here with the guidelines and recommendations to offer the chapter webmasters.

Key next steps:
1) Identify the website point-of-contact (POC) for the next fiscal year
2) Review your sites and compare to the recommended HIMSS design guidelines
3)Share how-to’s by submitting to Chapter Staff.

A call is scheduled for May 15 at 10 a.m. CST with the chapter POC’s to review where HIMSS is with the transition, and answer questions before moving into the next phase.

HIMSS would like to extend a special thanks to the Wisconsin Chapter of HIMSS for their assistance in working though troubleshooting the payment process with Results Direct and Pay Pal.  The  time and patience is greatly appreciated.  HIMSS is working to complete this as an option to the chapter.

FY16 Chapter Board Transition
Now is the time to start thinking about FY15 planning and board transitions.  All should begin the Chapter Board election process now, so the new board is identified before the start of the FY16 (July 1).  Identify open chapter board positions, review board position descriptions and policy documents, and identify members who would make a good fit. Reach out to the entire chapter membership for suggestions.  Directly contact past volunteers or chapter members that have participated at local events/activities during the past year to seek their interest in serving on the board.

In order to ensure a smooth transition for the chapter into the next fiscal year, schedule the Annual Transition and Strategic Planning meeting in May or early June. The transition meeting or retreat is the time to review duties and responsibilities with the incoming board, identify programs and initiatives to be implemented during the coming year, as well as complete the Annual Standards Report, set meeting dates, and identify committees.

Chapter Annual Standards Reports are due each year on July 31.  The new document will be available at the Chapter Leader Resource Area soon, but a majority of the information collected will be exactly the same as the FY14 report.

Plan to have the Annual Standards Report as an agenda item during the strategic planning meeting. The report includes the slate of officers for FY16, self-assessment, bylaw modifications, educational programs, communications, board meetings, the FY14 financial report and FY15 operating budget, and the FY15 Annual Plan.  Assign appropriate officers a portion of the report to complete before the planning meeting. Completing the report can be quick and easy as long as all board members contribute with a plan in place. Contact the Chapters Staff for assistance.

2015 Chapter Leader Survey
HIMSS is looking for all HIMSS chapter leadership to help better understand what issues and concerns effect our local board members. To do so, participate in the 2015 Chapter Leader Survey and provide feedback by May 18. Input could help shape innovative solutions for future leadership.  Please note that this original message was sent to all 2015 Chapter Leadership on April 7, prior to HIMSS15.

Feel free to provide any suggestions to make volunteering easier, as well as continue to strengthen HIMSS’ resources.  If any question does not apply to chapter leader roles, please disregard and leave blank. Send any questions to Chapter Staff.

HIMSS15 Chapter Activity
HIMSS is proud to announce that HIMSS15 hosted 43,500+ attendees and 1,500 exhibitors in Chicago.  The HIMSS Chapters’ participation was overwhelming:

  • 34 chapters who collaborated or individually hosted 21 luncheons / receptions
  • 24 chapters participated in the Communities Open House
  • 80+ Leaders attended the Chapter Leader Workshop
  • 20 Chapter Presidents/Elects attended the meet-up

HIMSS set multiple records both for HIMSS and the Chicago McCormick Place Convention Center.  Chapter presence at the local level, dedication to bringing HIMSS to members throughout the year, and communication of the value of both HIMSS and the chapters makes all of HIMSS and the conference an amazing success.

Thank you to all of the chapter leaders. It is an honor to serve with you on the journey to transform health through the best use of IT.  In the words of Vince Lombardi, “Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”

HIMSS16 will be held Feb. 29 – March 4, 2016 in Las Vegas.
