IA Medical Board Releases Telemedicine NPRM

December 19, 2014
The Iowa Medical Board has published new proposed rules for the practice of telemedicine in the state that closely resemble those the American Medical Association endorsed this summer. They require an in-person medical exam if it would otherwise be needed to treat the patient for that condition. The state will follow evidence-based guidelines established by a nationally recognized specialty organization.

The board will take comments on the rule through January 15 when a public hearing is scheduled. Iowa is one of a number of states including North Carolina, Florida, Virginia and Tennessee that are adopting or changing telemedicine practice guidelines this year.
