Please join Dr. Donald Wesson, immediate past chairman of the ABIM Foundation, for an informative presentation on the Choosing Wisely Campaign. Dr. Wesson is a board certified   internist and nephrologist and is currently Chief Academic Officer, Baylor Scott and White Health and Professor of Medicine at Texas A&M College of Medicine in Temple, Texas. This event is free and the public is   welcome.

The Choosing Wisely Campaign of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation helps patients and their providers collaboratively choose the right care, based on the best available evidence.  The campaign encourages patients to engage in collaborative conversations with their providers to choose the most appropriate care for their medical concerns and to avoid unnecessary care that is not likely to improve their health and might even cause harm. The campaign began with physicians across   many specialty societies and organizations publicizing “5 things” (tests or procedures) that are sometimes done for patients for which there is little scientific evidence that they help patients get better and might even pose risks for harm.  These lists have sparked valuable conversations among providers and patients that have led to better partnerships between patients and their providers and to a re-design of many medical practices to “hard   wire” elements of Choosing Wisely into the daily practice of medicine.

The event is sponsored by the Health Policy & Clinical Services division of Texas HHSC, the Texas Institute of Health Care Quality and Efficiency, and in cooperation with the Texas Medical Association (TMA). The TMA Choosing Wisely Campaign project is here: http://www.texmed.org/Template.aspx?id=29767. Those interested in attending in person are welcome at the DSHS K-100 Lecture Hall, 1100 W. 49th St., Austin, TX, 78756. Feel free to email james.cooley@hhsc.state.tx.us for additional information.
