Call To Action

HIMSS mobilizes its member base around the country and seeks to perform multiple levels of outreach activities to legislative staff through a variety of initiatives, providing accurate information about health IT to help them make effective public policy decisions.  As chapter leadership, your voice matters, as does your local member constituency!  Join us to share your health IT stories with chapter members, colleagues and policymakers.

Learn more about HIMSS Public Policy activities and how you can participate or subscribe to the complimentary weekly Health IT Policy Update e-newsletter.

Government Relations Call to Action for Chapter Leaders
The CONNECT for Health Act of 2017 has been introduced in both the U.S. Senate (S.1016) and House of Representatives (H.R. 2556) and is strongly supported by HIMSS. The CONNECT for Health Act of 2017 contains many of the recommendations that HIMSS has long advocated for, including in our HIMSS 2015 Congressional Ask #3 – Expand Access to Telehealth Services for Medicare Beneficiaries and 2017-2018 HIMSS Public Policy Principles.

This bipartisan legislation will modernize healthcare delivery for Medicare beneficiaries by removing barriers to the use of telehealth and other healthcare technologies such as remote patient monitoring. As a result, this legislation will offer:

  • greater access to high-quality care,
  • improved continuity of care, and
  • better value for patients and the Medicare program.

We urge you to contact your senators and representatives quickly and easily with our letter requesting that they co-sponsor the CONNECT for Health Act.

Take action to encourage your Senators and Representatives to cosponsor this important bipartisan legislation by sending a letter today!

Chapter Advocacy Roundtable
With over 50 chapters of HIMSS across the United States, one of our many strengths is to connect HIMSS members with local, state and national decision-makers on key health IT issues. The HIMSS Chapter Advocacy Program provides an opportunity for chapter boards to elect or appoint one or more members to serve in the chapter board-level position of HIMSS Chapter Advocate.  Learn more about the Chapter Advocacy Roundtable. Get involved!

Chapter Advocacy Super Sweeps
From Aug. 1 – Oct. 6, chapters are challenged to complete at least five of the 20 activities detailed in the Chapter Advocacy Recognition (CAR) Program Guide. This challenge is focused on expanding the advocacy reach of CAR members to state and local officials about the value of health IT.   At least one of the five activities must take place during National Health IT Week, Oct. 2-6. Advocates that complete five activities during Super Sweeps will receive recognition at the HIMSS18 and on the HIMSS SGA/GR website and social media pages.

The deadline for submissions is Oct. 20.  Find details about the challenge on the Chapter Leaders and Chapter Advocacy share site.

National Health IT Week in Your Home Town
National Health IT (NHIT) Week is a nationwide awareness week focused on the value of health IT. Each year, NHIT Week Partners educate industry and policy stakeholders on the value of health IT for the US healthcare system. This year's NHIT Points of Engagement include:

  • Supporting Healthcare Transformation
  • Expanding Access to High Quality Care
  • Increasing Economic Opportunity
  • Making Communities Healthier

There are many activities taking place across the country for 2017 NHIT Week.

Join the virtual march, participate in the student challenge or share your own health IT story on social media with #IHEARTHIT. Visit the National Health IT website to learn more about how you can help celebrate the value of health IT.

Celebrate National Health IT Week in Your Home Town
Plan on recognizing  NHIT Week, October 2-6, 2017, a nationwide awareness week focused on the value of health IT, in your hometown! There are number of ways you can celebrate, and HIMSS has created an NHIT Week Toolkit to make it easy to do so. Potential activities have varying time commitments, such as planning an event or webinar, staff recognition, distributing a press release, or working with your mayor or governor to proclaim National Health IT Week in your city or state. Questions? Contact info@healthitweek.org.

Improve Health Outcomes with EHR Analytics – Davies Award Winner
HIMSS is proud to share the first official first 2017 Davies Award recipient, Petaluma Health Center (PHC).

Dr. Oryn and the team at PHC are on the cutting edge in visual management of data, especially in the community health center sector. PHC has used an innovative analytics interface to create a culture of providers pulling care delivery and outcomes data as part of their regular workflow to identify opportunities for improvement.

A terrific resource, Dr. Oryn and her team would consider chapter collaboration to share their story, and interest chapter membership, about improving population health and chronic disease management, through the use of information and technology IT. Read more about Petaluma Health Center here.

Tools & Resources

HIMSS Enterprise Hashtags
HIMSS hashtags represent strategic focus areas, by either role, demographic, topic area, or industry celebration that align with our communities and services.  Our goal is to nurture engaged, thought leadership-driven social media communities where we can. This strategy will help:

  • Acquire new audiences
  • Curate content
  • Discuss timely topics
  • Promote audience-specific HIMSS initiatives

When should Chapter Leaders use these hashtags?
Chapters should use these hashtags when discussing any of these topics on social media –Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.  Social media best practice recommends using no more than two hashtags at any given time. We encourage chapters to use hashtags when:

  • Developing/implementing FY18 goals and tactics
  • Tweeting live  chapter events
  • Planning chapter events or collaborating events
  • Promoting and conducting webinars
  • Sharing content from www.himss.orgor chapter websites

Check out the HIMSS Social Media Hashtag Guide to learn more.

How to Apply Accelerated Learning and Spreads to Organizational Practice
Thursday, September 21 l 12:00pm CT l Register

Because of their clinical and technical expertise, nursing informaticists are frequently called upon to lead or consult on initiatives that start small but have the goal to create widespread impact. Regardless of the size of an initiative, Nurse informaticists can benefit from using a clear and systematic method to assess, understand, design, implement, evaluate, and spread best practices effectively. This webinar pinpoints the importance of implementing Learning Scale and Spreads through XLS and shares how it can be applied to your professional practice. Led by Dennis Deas, managing director, enterprise performance improvement, Kaiser Permanente. Click here for more information.
