Summary

Healthcare is in-the-midst of an industry-wide digital transformation, which is leading to changes in how organizations think about the value of centralized data, resource optimization, changing patient expectations, value of putting patients first, and empowering patients with tools.

Most consumer health tools are incredibly fragmented.  Each platform lives in its own silo, backed by an industry whose business model can inadvertently incentivize complexity.  From online banking to Amazon, people are exposed to world-class digital experiences every day.  Patients will expect the same level of performance in healthcare.  However, too often healthcare industry complexities are manifested onto the patient.

Healthcare needs solutions that empower the relationship between patients and providers, and increase quality and satisfaction while lowering the cost of care.   Closing the care loop by accessing, engaging, and collaborating, allows all parties to become more proactive with care.  This panel will discuss the importance of digital patient engagement in a post covid-19 world, the evolution of digital consumer loyalty in other industries and how these are critical for outcomes based care.

Speaker Biographies

Chris Bailey has over 20 years of experience working in the healthcare IT sector. He currently serves as the Director of Business Development for Velatura, the exclusive retailer of Michigan Health Information Network (MiHIN) products and services outside of Michigan. His work focuses on building client and partner relationships to support collaborative innovation opportunities. Chris is also the founder of Care Convene, a virtual health service provider that not only extends the brick-and-mortar doctor’s office but also focuses on patient literacy.

Previously, Chris served as the Regional Data Analytics Manager for Affinia Health Network’s Clinically Integrated Network which connects four hospitals and over 1,400 physicians in West Michigan. At Affinia, Chris built a business intelligence team to support quality reporting, data visualization, and payer performance for the region. Prior, Chris spent two years as Director of Informatics for Mercy Health Physician Partners, a multi-specialty physician network in West Michigan, where he led the implementation of athenahealth EMR. Prior to his Mercy Health role, Chris spent four years at Ascension Health as a Clinical Applications Manager building a team of 52 high performers and coordinating a large team of consultants. He improved employee engagement, financial operations, successfully met Meaningful Use (Stage 1/Stage2) for inpatient and ambulatory environments; and built a national reporting team to leverage human capital and reporting assets. Before Ascension, Chris spent seven years at Spectrum Health, an integrated health system in West Michigan, where he worked as an IT Analyst, project manager, and process improvement facilitator.

Chris holds a BA in Eastern European Studies from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Michigan State University. He is a certified Project Management Professional from the Project Management Institute.

Kevin J. Bohnsack, MD, MPH, CPE, FAAFP, is a board-certified family physician at IHA Milan Primary Care and medical director for the Southeast Michigan Clinically Integrated Network. His passion for quality, patient safety and transitions of care have led him to several leadership roles and patient advocate positions within the Trinity Health system. He also serves as the State Air Surgeon with the Michigan Air National Guard, applying his background and training in aerospace medicine to oversee the medical standards and qualifications of over 2,500 personnel, providing technical expertise and recommendations for the ongoing COVID response and other domestic operations and supporting and mentoring current and future leaders.

Kevin Budelman is president and co-founder of Peopledesign, a strategy and human-centered design firm based in Michigan. Besides serving as an advisor to clients, Kevin is an adjunct professor at Northwestern University and is the former global president of IxDA, the Interaction Design Association. He holds degrees from Carnegie Mellon University and the IIT Institute of Design. Kevin Budelmann is interested in strategic design for business, education, healthcare, and society. He is the author of "Brand Identity Essentials," available in six languages and a second edition.

Speaker: Guy C. Hembroff, PhD, Associate Professor, College of Computing, Director, Health Informatics Graduate Program, Michigan Technological University

Summary

In this webinar, Dr. Hembroff will discuss his work in developing a trusted framework architecture designed to improve population health management and patient engagement. He demonstrates how his team’s work in the development of accurate geo-tagged pandemic prediction algorithms used to help coordinate medical supply chains to care for patients most vulnerable to COVID-19, can extend to help improve general population health management.  The framework consists of a holistic and secure mHealth community model for residents to overcome significant barriers of care and provide healthcare agencies improved coordinated population management through the aggregation of longitudinal patient health data, including patient generated health data (PGHD) and social determinants of health (SDOH).  The architecture’s security includes the development of touchless biometrics, capable of large-scale identity management through the establishment of unique health identifiers (UHIDs).   Machine learning algorithms can strategically connect residents to community resources and provide customized health education aimed at increasing the health literacy, empowerment, and self-management of patients.  Users are able to securely share their health data with others (e.g., physicians, caregivers), while clinicians can better track patients, offering improved preventative measures and care management.

Speaker Biography

Dr. Guy Hembroff is an associate professor at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. He is the director of the Health Informatics graduate program (https://www.mtu.edu/health-informatics) and the ICC Cybersecurity Center (https://www.mtu.edu/icc/centers/cybersecurity) within the College of Computing. Dr. Hembroff holds a PhD in Computational Science and Engineering (CS&E) with expertise in network engineering, machine learning, deep learning, biometric development, intelligent medical devices, and cybersecurity.

Summary

Ready to Launch: From Concept to Reality is a physician organization sponsored virtual HIE conference that will highlight the boots-on-the-ground efforts of practices and providers across Michigan.

Conference attendees will hear HIE success stories from various stakeholders throughout the state, and how local initiatives continue to shape the healthcare community.  They will gain insights into advanced healthcare information exchange and how it has been adopted by various physician organizations and their member practices.  Participating physician organizations will share stories about their work supporting health information exchange, interoperability and current initiatives and achievements to optimize healthcare services and product solutions.

Speakers will explore how the changing landscape for health information exchange is shaping opportunities for all stakeholders to reevaluate the use of ever more fluid electronic health data to facilitate transformation initiatives and their own success with business goals.

As an in-kind sponsor for the conference, the HIMSS Michigan Chapter will host a virtual program for students and young professions on Day 2 of the event.  In addition to general education sessions, attendees will have opportunities to network with industry professionals and participate in professional development sessions and career fair.
